Hi all,

Here's a capture I made at a park near our home. I'd appreciate any comments, Thanks!

Very nice! You have captured the feel of fall here quite well. I would definately want to take a walk over that bridge and enjoy that marvelous view!

Nice shot there, F-Stop. But I'm curious; can you tell me the reason you shot at ISO 2000 in broad daylight and with a shutter speed of 1/4000th?

I'm curious as well I looked at the EXIF data and it says he shot in S ~ Shutter Priority does that mean that F-Stop choose the Shutter Speed, and the camera choose the ISO and Aperture? As I have stated many times I am still learning about all this.

Yes and no. In Shutter priority mode, you select the shutter speed and the camera will then select the aperture. The iso would only be selected by the camera if you have "auto-iso" enabled. If not, you could then end up with under exposed shots if you select too fast of a shutter speed for the amount of light available.

Well, they always say that a poor workman blames his tools (!), so the only thing I can say is that I blew it and the camera covered for me. When I got the camera for my birthday last month, I was reading Ken Rockwell's site (it came up when I googled a question). He seems knowledgeable so I set up the camera as he suggested as a starting point. Auto ISO was one of the suggestions so it's where I've been shooting so far. But S mode was a mistake; I usually shoot in P mode but I was out with my wife shooting away, spinning dials, and that's what resulted. I didn't even realize that had happened!
I am going to get out of Auto ISO and move more toward manual operation. I probably should have been at ISO 64 or 100, huh? I've always liked shooting shutter priority for water shots but I know that in this case I just mistakenly had the camera at S instead of P mode. It's amazing how much the D5100 compensates to get the exposure...and I'm just learning how to work with digital. My previous camera was a Canon A-1 that I had three nice lenses for, and this is my first DSLR. I had a Coolpix for my very first digital camera. I am just loving learning about the DSLR world! Reading Bruce Barnbaum's "The Art of Photography" now and my Christmas list has Ansel Adam's 3 books on it, I think they're called "The Camera", "The Negative", and "The Print".

Thanks, everyone for your input! Now, I have what will sound like a dumb question, but how do I get to the EXIF data after I post the photo? When I posted it I tried to cut and paste the data but I couldn't get it off the JPEG. Obviously it's accessible, but I tried right-clicking and I don't know how to get to the file. I can see it in ViewNX2, but I don't see it from the JPEG I posted. Where am I going wrong?

F-stop,

Assuming you are using Windows, open the image by double clicking it in your original post. Once opened, right click and save the image to your desktop. Once on your desktop, open the image Windows photo gallery (default image viewer with Windows Vista). Once open then right click the image and select 'Properties'. In the 'details' tab is all the camera information.

Your shot was taken on a D5100 with f-stop of 5.6, exposure time 1/4000 sec, ISO-2000 with no exposure bias. You were using a focal length of 55mm and were metering in pattern mode, with no flash.

Its scary the details that you transmit along with an image!!!!!
