A before(after hdr merge and a little sharpening).

I like the middle one, partially de-saturated ,, there's what looks to be a sensor spot or such , to the left of the chin of the cat though.
Cranking up the contrast or clarity , just temporarily, usually highlights those .

thequeenscheese,

Question - what color is the matte (background) originally? Did the HDR result in the background blending with the cat's colors?

Maybe post a mid-range exposure so we can see the "before" shot. I think a more solid white background would bring out the cat's colors better than HDR due to the increased contrast.

Just my $0.02

It's a low light magnolia wall, she is one of those cats that particularly has a fluffy exterior I was also playing with my f1.8, I'll post the mid range image tho when I'm next on the pc..

Your profile say no editing so I won't post my edits but the first shoot looks much better to me with a proper white balance adjustment (right now it's heavy on the red and green). With the white balance adjusted and a little tweak to the Vibrance and Contrast the shot really popped. You also might want to consider cropping to 5:7; reducing the negative space on the left edge.

Ah, you used a Nifty Fifty! Great for portraits.

Actually, that shot reminds me of my 3rd Grade class photo - without the whiskers. Seriously, you caught the cat in a great pose, which is 90% of photography.
