Just a quick shot with my NEW D7000. Just upgraded my D70s. Playing around. All was taken manual with a manual Nikkor 50mm 1.4 lens. I always shoot manual but just starting to pay attention to what I'm setting..otherwise I was just setting and re-setting until I liked the image.

ISO 160
F-stop 2.8
Shutter 1/50

I do love the camera..I wanted the D700..not sure I will use the video on the D7000. But I really needed to upgrade my D70s if I wanted to keep growing as a photographer (the D70s doesn't let me completely control everything in manual mode with my old manual lenses). But getting out there and doing some shots with it...I fell in Love completely and it will work for a long time to help me grow (LOVE THE RANGE FOR THE ISO SETTINGS!!) I can not wait to keep posting pics for everyone:) and please any thought and feed back would be wonderful!! I love hearing peoples opinions! They may not be the same as mine but that is what is so great about photography..everyone has their own style and some people Love your photos and other Hate them and think you awful! LOL.....Battery grip will be coming soon! Need to do some shoots to pay for one :)

Hey Heather, congrats on the new camera. :) You're gonna have fun with that puppy, eh! :)
On your first picture...............personally, I think it looks a little washed out.....as in no discernible contrast. I don't think you needed to shoot it at ISO 160. It looks like it was shot in bright sunlight, so an ISO of 100 would have been better. The more light you have available, the less ISO needed.
I'm not in the habit of criticizing others as I'm no raving expert, but I just felt the need to point out things that I myself noticed about the shot. This is what I would have done to it to make it "pop":

What do you think? Much difference? Any difference? Better? Worse?

Heather, I would wait on the Battery grip. I have one coming from a company in China, should get it next week. It is about a quarter the price of the Nikon grip (about $70.00) with shipping in. I will let you know after I get it and let you know.
I am told I will not be able to tell the difference between it and the Nikon Grip, I will post pics. And give my review of it when I get it.

I do like that one as well...the photo was taken in mind for a canvas..so it was suppose to be softer because of the current images she has hanging up. Also it was completly cloudy...no sunlight really at all. HAHA I should have put this all up before :) A texture is going to be added to the image as well to give it more of a painting/art feeling:)

Plus you should have stopped your lens down to get a greater D.O.F. Just my 2 cents on your photo.

Normally I would have done this but it was like this for the purpose of the final product...Its going on a canvas and she like this small depth of field where it is pretty much focusing on the one branch but has the overwhelming color of yellow too...I do like the way it is cropped by Jack though :) Thank you both for the feed back! I really appreciate it :)

The grip I have coming is not yet on the market, I have friends in China that helped me out.
So I guess I will be the first to try it, but I am told it looks & feel just like the Nikon?
When I get it I will post pics. I am hopping it will be as they promised...lol.

Hello Heather.

It's a lovely flower, a great camera and nice lens! However a +3.00 exposure bias is the reason it looks so washed out! Yikes...what's up with that?? :)

Also - a lesser point - you were shooting at 1/50 with your 50mm lens. However as the D7000 is a crop sensor camera - that 50mm gets multiplied by 1.5 and is really a 75mm for determining minimum shutter speed (i.e. 1/focal length) Therefore, bumping up the shutter speed to 1/75 would also be recommended - especially for a non-VR lens.

Your EXIF (emphasis added by me)
Camera Maker: NIKON CORPORATION
Camera Model: NIKON D7000
Image Date: 2011-05-10 09:34:54 +0000
Aperture: f/0.0 ?? Now that's one fast lens! :)
Exposure Time: 0.020 s (1/50) Bump this up a bit
ISO equiv: 160
Exposure Bias: +3.00 EV Way too much!
Metering Mode: Center Weight
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
White Balance: Manual
Light Source: Cloudy
Flash Fired: No (enforced)
Orientation: Normal
Color Space: sRGB
GPS Coordinate: undefined, undefined

Regards,

HAHA! Okay how to I find this? As for the F/0.0 that is because it is an old manual lens...all of it is controlled on the lens its self no the camera

Th +3.00..I did fix that later on..after I realized it was set like that..I don't know why..I may have bumped it up just messing when I first got it. Thanks for showing me this EXIF though...how to I get that added to my posts like you have it?
I guess the lady who noticed it on Facebook really like it like this though and really if she likes it thats all that matters. I will be doing a corrected one tomorrow with the exposure bias fixed. Really Really thank you all for your feed back! Now to keep practicing :)

If you mean the image's EXIF well I use FireFox and added an EXIF extension: HERE Another great EXIF reader is Opanda: HERE Please note the different versions depending on the browser and/or OS you use.

Yup...that would sure explain it! :)

I often forget to lower the ISO so I know what you mean.

Thanks for showing me this EXIF though...how to I get that added to my posts like you have it?

My pleasure. Well once you install one of the EXIF readers like above, there is an option to copy and paste (again I use the FF extension).

I guess the lady who noticed it on Facebook really like it like this though and really if she likes it thats all that matters. I will be doing a corrected one tomorrow with the exposure bias fixed.

Yup...the customer is always right! I'll be interested in seeing the corrected version. Just keep an eye on the histogram and you'll be fine.

Really Really thank you all for your feed back! Now to keep practicing :)

It was my pleasure. I'm pleased that you found my feedback useful.
