York Shambles

Here's a shot I took the other night after a day of rain - It is of the Shambles, a medieval street in the city of York.

I like the picture (lighting and composition) but I wonder if it wouldn't be better in B&W? Have you tried it?

Here's a black & white version - I tried a few and settled on this as my favourite. All thoughts appreciated.

LOVE it, although this high contrast version almost adds a more sinister feel to it, what do you think? Or just a late night feel...

One could almost call it "Night at the pub: a long walk home." :)

Really captures the atmosphere of York. Loved the city when I visited. My wife was born not far from there and always vowed to take me before we moved to France and your photo brings back memories.

Might I add, this pic just put York on the "places I wish I could visit some day" list. :) Share some of the other notable sites from around the area!!

I love the B&W feeling. The darkness of the street emphasizes the character of a rainy night.

I really like the picture, but I have to ask. This picture has a miniature look to it, how was it processed. I've seen these before and I believe they were done with a tilt/shift lens, no clue but really curious how to achieve this.

Google can be your best friend for tutorials. Look for miniature effect in Photoshop.

Thanks for your kind words everyone, looking at the two versions together, I agree that the black & white works better. @Pretzel - It does feel a bit more sinister... some other versions I tried first were either "too grey" or blocked out the shadows, the effect I landed on here was the "Wet rocks" from Silver Efex which I then customised a little to suit. York is well worth a visit if you are ever over this side of the pond & there are more shots from the city in my "Every so often" thread in the 365 section :)
@montignac - I'm glad the picture stirs some memories... I think I have succeeded if the shot makes Pretzel want to visit, and you to return!
@Krs_2007 - As Marcel & yourself touched on, there is a tilt-shift effect which I applied in ColorEfex, but I rotated the filter to the line of the street.

Thanks again everyone!

Fabulous images... much prefer the B&W.

It was with horror that I noticed some of Nottinghams old narrow cobbled streets demolished to make way for new architecture :(

Thanks Tracey, it is a shame when old building are pulled down for apparently better new ones. Luckily York is a tourism town so has quite a bit of protection from re-development.

Great shots Steve, must have been the only time The Shambles wasn't full of people!

Thanks Lee, I took the shot over 50+ seconds so a lot of the people blurred out, then the bokeh effect more or less hid the rest... If you look carefully at the first doorway on the left, there is a person there (Very blurred)

@SteveH great shot both in colour and B&W. I was born not too far from York its a great city.,my son went to Uni there.

Knaresborough would be another good site to share the ambience.
