Moon Shot

I finally was able to do a decent moon shot. Took me a while and fussing with and without the fine focus adjustments in the D7000 menu. Seems my 70-300 did need a -4 correction.
But, I'm happy since I had tried to do this shot with the tripod earlier this winter, but I froze before I was happy with the shot. tonight was milder so I took the time to use the mirror up function. The shots I tried without raising the mirror were blurred...
So now I know.

Thanks, but actually, the exposure was way over. I had to bring it down with my raw converter. But I got less noise.
I realized that working with a 300 on a DX doesn't leave much room for errors.

Excellent work. It's one of those things I keep trying and getting better at, but this is great. Well done :)

Excellent photograph. What type of lens did you use on your D7000? What settings did you use to take picture? I seriously considering buying the D7000 now because I'm tired of waiting for the rumored D400 to be released by Nikon. Now it seems like with all of the disasters going on, the time table for new cameras will be pushed back to some time in 2012.

Nice shot, Marcel. I'm going to try and get a shot tomorrow night.......if it's clear. Hopefully I'll get some decent shots. :)

Really nice shot, Marcel, and I love the quote, too! I'm going out tonight and tomorrow . . . looks like the evenings will be nice!

I used the 70-300 4-5.6 VR. 1/320th F 7.1 800 ISO. But Beware, my shots were originally OVEREXPOSED. Glad I shot raw otherwise, I couldn't have gotten these.
It's going to be cloudy here tonight, that's why I had to do it yesterday even if the moon wasn't completely full.
Thanks for the good words.

Think I'll set up by Cree Meadows, what do you think will be the best time?

Bill, I was out at the Fort Stanton Cemetery tonight and the moon didn't become visible on the horizon until a little past 6:30. Tomorrow it looks like it will be closer to 7:30. I'm not sure where I'll go tomorrow night.

I used the photographer's ephemeris. The time was wrong by about an hour. I'm thinking it didn't take daylight savings time into consideration. Then, because it was still so bright out, the sun hadn't set yet at 5:30, I almost missed it rising on the horizon about 6:30 because I was looking in the wrong place. So now I need to get a compass!
