2nd Attempt at Casual Inddor Family group shots

A few months ago, actually back during Thanksgiving, I posted some indoor family event "snap shots" of the casual style.

Tonight I again had the request to shoot some more of a small group of family that were visiting. Same living room as before, same lighting.

I tried harder this time to pay attention to background.

I used off camera flash bounced off the ceiling.

Have I improved with these shots compared to the others in this thread:

I would crop about an 1" off the top photo and maybe a 1/2" off the top of the bottom photo. Gives me the feeling of little people on a big couch with all the dead space above.

I would lighten the top photo a bit.

Tried to do a quick crop, as an example, but it's blocking me from saving the image.

Yeah. I left plenty of room to crop to any size/ratio since it won't be me that does the prints I have no idea how they will want to crop them.

Save for maybe a cleaner stage/background in the future, these looks fine to me. Properly exposed, sharp.

Unfortunately at this house this is about as clean a background as you will find. I hate doing these types of shots but they asked and it was dark outside so we couldn't do them outdoors.

Okay, I cropped it as to what a 5x7 would be and lightened it up a bit. Is this closer to what you were suggesting?

I do like this better. The white curtain isn't dingy gray anymore. And the yellow shirt is yellow and pops as yellow does.

Maybe see if you can bring down the highlights a bit. The boys cheeks are a little hot and the forehead of the lady on the left side.

Overall, for a casual shoot, I think they're pretty darn good and a huge improvement from your last!

Okay, sure... You could tweak them a little here and there, maybe improve the skin tones a bit maybe but I don't think the background is an issue here, personally. If you were shooting in a studio, sure; but this is a family shot taken in the family home, so don't sweat the curtains.

I'm guessing these are photos that will be held on to for a long time and most likely very much appreciated in years to come.

Nicely done.
