Purple water

This is my first picture post.
I had a play around last night with some water, a wine glass, coloured card and a bit of patience and managed to get a colourful shot below. Hope you like it, I may have another go at this when I get an off-camera flash. DaveH

Very good shot, DaveH. Good use of the rule of thirds by putting the subject in the lower right thirds intersection. The purple color is a great attention grabber and gives the shot a very pleasing effect. Good bokeh for the background and the water around the water drop. Good use of photo tension to redirect the eye back to the main subject, the rebounding water drop. The wine glass is an intricate part of the composition and could easily be too distracting. By cutting off the right edge and most of the wine glass below the rim creates photo tension which pushes the eye back to the subject, the water drop. Everything in the shot directs the eye to the subject. A simple composition but complex in it's execution. Good job.

Gee whiz, Mr. Bautsch...it's gonna be hard to follow that! I agree with most of what you said. Congrats on posting your first photo in the critique forum, DaveH. It's a big step to put your work out there for others to give feedback on. Shots like this are very difficult, and anyone who has tried it can appreciate the amount of patience it takes to capture one. Kudos for sticking with it.

Did your purple paper have glitter or some other texture on it? It's a cool effect w/ the bokeh. Purple is an interesting mood color, and blue would've been another good choice for this shot.

I think your depth of field is a little bit off, maybe by an inch or two. The water droplet is perfectly in focus, yet the front and rear edges of the glass are not. For me at least, I think there needs to be some separation between the glass and the background. Here, they appear to blend together.

Wow. Thanks for the comprehensive comments Joseph and everyone. Most appreciated! Allways nice to get some feedback be it good or bad.

Anthony - the backdrop didn't have glitter on it, just splashes of water which I put on there before I started taking the shot. The water droplets reflected the flash and produced a bonus bokeh-effect for the photo. I hear what you are saying about the relatively narrow depth-of-field but that's kinda what I was after in this shot. I just wanted the water in focus, not the glass in the foreground/background. I actually did try a smaller aperature which brought more of the glass into focus, but I didn't like it as much as it seemed a much 'harder' image. But I agree on the background-to-glass seperation.... the next time I try this I may try and move the background further away from the glass or just stop down a little to widen the DoF as you said. Cheers for the advice!

Dave, this is a superb shot, for all the above reasons (from Joseph and Anthony) I don't know how much better it could get!
Kudos to you for putting your work out there, and we look forward to more!

Best Regards

Thanks ohkphoto, most appreciated. It's my first shot at shooting water so I may have another go at it sometime soon to see if I can get a bigger splash (I may need a waterproof camera though).
I also have a slightly different one from the above which has a different droplet and slightly stronger colours, I'm tempted to upload that one to replace the above. Again, cheers for the feedback :)
