Quick portrait in club. What do you think?

I was taking photos of the guests at a local Sacramento club trying to get a feel for what it might be like to shoot a concert. I was granted access and also was allowed to shoot the drag show. This was a quick shot with not much time to figure what to do. It was also my first time usung my SB700 that I had just purchased the day prior.

Any thoughts. I kind of cut off her fingers a bit. Is that too distracting?

Well Drag Queens have changed or have I missed something ;) Sorry my family tell me all the time that I am not funny but I don't listen .
as for the photo it looks like a fun time, however I think the flash is to harsh on her face IMHO

The person in the background is very distracting. This is more of a snapshot than a portrait.

LOL She wasn't one of the drag queens. Not sure if I want to post any of those here!

I like her expression and I like her. Your shot might be a bit off technically, so maybe it's more of an interesting snapshot. Thanks for posting. Try bouncing your flash.

Too flashy. Would you be shooting a concert with a flash?

No I wouldn't. I was trying to figure how to use the flash to freeze the action but still get as much ambient light as I could. All this without bothering to read any instructions pour the manual for my brand new flash. Lol

You know you can dial down the power on that flash, right? Once you read the manual, you'll see what I mean. I love this flash....so easy to use.

Definitely looks like a snap shot, as for being too high then yes if she is shorter than you you do need to bend alittle. After all you want to get the best 'side' of her.

This photo has potential.

...and I think she'd really like Scott's softened version.
I think with practice, you'll get it. But reading the manual is probably "mandatory," at some point. And like anything, the sooner you do it, the sooner you'll see results. :)

I did break down and read the manual. I went back to the club and the shots came out better this time. I turned three flash down to 1/8 power and used rear curtain sync at .6 sec shutter speed. Much nicer

Here's my edit -- I did too many little things to really want to explain. Don't be afraid to kneel unless you have bad knees! :D

The thumbnail looks awful by the way, make sure you view it full size
