My wife Katie loves cooking and baking and is VERY good at it and I love to photograph her handy work. So here are some blueberry fairy cakes she made today.... and believe me they taste fantastic :p

Two things come to mind here John

1. A slightly increased DOF, they look really nice but all should be in focus

2. A sample....:)

Thank you..... but I personally prefer a shallow depth of field for this type of photo

No samples... they are all MINE (and my wife and my son and my daughter - well I might get one then  )

I <3 food photography. I've been putting some feelers out there to some local businesses to try to get some things going.

I think the shallow DoF has it's place, and agree that it can be used here. But I also think you've only got it partially right. I don't think there's enough separation here to really highlight that front cupcake from the rest with a shallow DoF.

The lighting is a bit flat as well. I like what you've done with the cutting board/wood block, but some wrap-around lighting is definitely needed here to add dimension. Some water spritz would help shine up those blueberries, which makes them look juicy and more appetizing.

Thanks, yeah I agree maybe a bit of moisture on the berries might have improved it but it was not an elaborate set up by any means just my wife's cake on a board in front of the window. No lights, no reflectors and just my 50mm lens

And exactly how many innocent fairies died, needlessly I might add, in the manufacture of these cakes?

.....

Hey those fairies did not die needlessly their sacrifice provided some lovely cakes :D
