Hello all well here I am again at the whipping post ! I am trying to get a pleasing image , Nikon D5100 50mm 1.8G, BW Jetty.jpg f4.5, 1/800, ISO 100

Must make contrast highlight *no pun intended* subject of the picture. Here I can't even tell what your subject is let alone what you are trying to do with the contrast.

B&W = very difficult

Like your approach to exposure though

Yellow filter would do crazy things to this snap...maybe make it "better"...make it a study of DOF...

Horizon line dangerously close to 50/50 horizontal...taboo...

Turn snap upside down and you'll see how lopsided negative space is...

This is an image where near to far sharpness could have been a huge benefit. The depth of field is way too shallow. The railing provides a good leading line, but it really does not actually lead to anything. A leading line should lead the viewer's eyes right to your image's subject.

In my photograph below, the boardwalk also provides a good leading line, but it leads to my subject; a pier with 2 benches and a person (my wife actually) sitting on one of the benches.

Ever since the dead-pan movement, horizons in the center don't bother me so much but I am a bit confused with your subject matter. What are you trying to show the viewer? What do you want us to take home from your image? I think these are much more pertinent questions than compositional issues.
