Famiy Portraits at the beach

Hey all. Took some pictures of my friend and her family at the beach this weekend (with the bright red sunburn to prove it) and I was processing some of the pictures and started to get a little discouraged. Since everyone was wearing white or black shirts and jeans and between the sand/water/sky... they all are looking too similar to each other. Here is one I converted to black and white and here are the specs:

Nikon D3000
f/5.6
1/5000 sec
55mm
Lens Nikon DX 55-200

In this particular picture, dad was pretending to throw the son in the sea. I liked that the waves kind of framed him :) I'd like to get a little more impact from this picture and just am not sure how. Also, here's a link to the rest of the photos if you'd like to peek and maybe offer some pointers. Thanks :) GoodBoyPhotography's Photos | SmugMug Just click on the "Leister" album.

Hello LyonsH,

There are zzzzzillions ways to do beach shots! Dominant high keys is one way and
not my favourite. But you… you did something very sweet with this occasion! On
some picture the story is more difficult to read but not the artistic approach you
put in it. B&W or colour, your approach and the applied pp is refreshingly constant!

I like that. Please, do it again…

I liked your family portraits on the beach, especially the B&W ones... They have really nice tone, unlike a lot of conversions I see.

(I also looked around your site a bit and saw some things I've photographed before - like The Amish Outlaws and some stuff in Annapolis. Good stuff, too!)

I really like this photo as well as the others in your gallery. The angle, composition, technique are perfect. The only thing that would have given the photo more impact was if the child were a little more animated . . . and that's not necessarily in your control.

When you're photographing people, I think the most important thing is to capture their essence and magical moments of interaction, and you did that very well. Technically, a combination of sun, sand and water with black clothing is tough to get right exposure wise without having harsh shadows, or having to resort to a lot of light modifiers --and by the time you set up screens, etc., you risk losing the special moments, especially when kids are involved. So I really like the "high key" processing . . . it gives the photos a very ethereal effect.

This is a very lovely set of photos and shows that you have a certain style and excellent eye for capturing decisive moments.

Keep up the outstanding work.

I can't critique on the photos due to not having enough experience myself. But I will say I like the photos, you did a great job and have an eye for it. Keep it up.
