I like the Critique section and also think the new
format may work well. So to get things going I thought I'd start it off.

D3100
F-stop f/4.8
ISO 100
Exposure time 1/400 sec.
Exposure program Manual
Lighting Natural (sun rise)

Story: Morning time on the Gulf Coast.

Looking for feed back on exposure and composition. (Or anything else that would improve this shot)

Thanks,

composition looks good to me cos of the natural behavior of that bird.

I think it is a bit too bright especially the wing-top near the neck

I don't know how to rate - I see the

Very nice capture, with good depth of field. Seems to be slightly overexposed since the wings blend in with the water. Good detail in the bird's eye. Angle of shooting might have been a little more creative . . . If you shot from a lower angle to get more of the land background instead of the water. Notice how nice the feathers look against the darker green.

I would suggest a little more post processing to bring out the details in the feathers and add a little more punch.

Nice shot and interesting subject matter. Needs a little more post processing to lighten up the bird so it does not blend in with the water so much. Also It could use a little more "nose room" so the subject would not be so centered.

Interesting capture, great timing! I like the composition and Depth of field also. Some blown out areas due to the direct sunlight, might be able to post process those areas a bit more as mentioned. Might make a nice B&W giving it a bit more separation from the water perhaps.

Overall I really like this image, patience is often the key to great shots like this. The shallow depth of field does and excellent job of isolating this beautiful bird from the background. If I might make a few suggestions. The image as presented is somewhat overexposed. Highlights in the bird's plumage are blown out somewhat. There is also the yellowish cast due no doubt to the fact that this was taken in early morning when the sun is still low in the sky. I adjusted the overall scene brightness and eliminated most of the yellowish cast.

Thanks everyone for the feed back. Sounds like I need to work on my exposure a bit. (among other things) I now have some more things to think about before pressing the button. Hopefully I can learn from it. :)

That's a winning attitude and one that will allow you to grow further! Eventually things like exposure become second nature. Great job!

I love the subject matter and the depth of field, yes the top of the wings are a little blown out but i think it captures the time of day and the setting that it is in.
