Hi all,
For those in the same position as me, who are or have been looking for a decent, light tripod that doesn't break the bank - I stumbled on a Giottos 8223-50 carbon fibre tripod with 3-way head today in my local independent dealers.... They had 3 left for £100 including a carry case.
I haven't had chance to use it fully, but in the shop and kitchen at home it seems very sturdy, and is nice and light to carry! :)

This little trick was taught to me by a Manfrotto rep, directly from Italy; if you really want to know how strong your tripod is, open it up fully, legs fully extended, hold onto the top mount and hang from it. If it collapses, it's junk. If it holds your weight with no problems........that's the one for you! Cool, eh! :)

Nice idea Jack... Although I could see me getting thrown out of the shop for swinging on the tripods to test them!

I took my new 'pod out last night for a few shots, and it seems to be excellent for my D3100 + 55-300mm lens, so I'm very happy with my purchase!
