What's the deal with CF cards?

I've been watching the price of Compact Flash cards go up and up and up. About a month ago I ordered a 2-pack of Lexar 32G cards for $134 from Adorama but they were back ordered. I just received my notification that they've been ship and when I clicked on the link in the email I almost had a heart attack because they're now listed at $219!!! I quickly looked at my order and thank goodness they only charged me $134. So what's the deal? Why is the price on these things going thru the roof? Did a factor burn down or what? Surely it can't be a deluge of D800 users all wanted higher speed CF cards, can it?

I purchased a 64gb 400x Lexar a few months ago for the same price as your two 32gb CF cards. It might be an error on their part.

Surprisingly I don't think this is a typo. B&H and Amazon are also showing crazy high prices for CF cards. Something must be going on.

I think it's demand and supply. Ever since the SD cards have taken a very large share of the market, I can see in my computer stores the displays of CF shrink. There are less and less in the stores and they are more expensive than ever.I got 8G compact cards from Walmart (the only place i could find them in Sherbrooke) for 27$ a piece… Two weeks ago I ordered SDs from Best Buy 29$ a piece for 32G… Go figure.
This is why I was wondering if Nikon and others would keep the CFs in newer models. But they did so now we pay. If you find deals in your respective areas, you might as well stock up.

well, at least once you load up the dual slots, with larger enough cards, you don't have to buy more. seems like 48G or so is plenty.

I don't use anything over 8G in my cameras (more like 4G most of the time), so I don't care how much those large cards cost. :) That's another problem with FX cameras...........you need larger capacity cards to feed them! No thanks.........I'll stick to DX until they don't make them anymore. :)
