Last December, I wanted a bag large enough to carry not only my Nikon gear & tripod, but enough food, water, clothing and my laptop to get me through a day or two. So I ended up with a 5.11 RUSH72 Tactical Backpack for about $125. I think it has dropped in price a bit since then. [https://www.amazon.com/5-11Tactical-RUSH12-Military-Backpack-Rucksack/dp/B005AG3A9C]. They come in different sizes of course, but in general, I found the 'tactical' backpacks to offer more flexibility than the standard photo backpacks. The only downside is the lack of camera-specific padding, but that was easily handled with a little DIY ingenuity.
Good luck!

ThinkTank provided me one of the new Retrospective Backpack 15's to review. I'm in the middle of it but without being able to take for an extended use, I'm struggling a bit. I am very impressed so far. They took the best of the Retrospective shoulder bags and really thought about how to build a versatile backpack.

I intend to post the review here but if you have specific questions, let me know.

I don't use backpacks myself, but ThinkTank holsters are impressive and very well made. Plus they have excellent customer service! Am looking forward to your review when you are able. :)

Bags are a very personal choice but I've been happy with my Manfrotto Pro Backpack 50. I've had mine for years and it's held up really, really well.

It's a big bag, and wider than the LowePro 350 you returned, but not by a lot.
