CFexpress card is physically compatible with XQD and a firmware upgrade should take care of the camera end. I haven't bought XQD cards yet and seems like I won't need to. Currently I have enough CF cards to last me a few lifetimes.
9 Nikon single-digit pro bodies from D1H to D5.
12 Nikon three-digit consumer bodies from D100 and up.
56 Nikkor prime lenses from AIS 8/2.8 to AFS 400/2.8VR
4 Nikkor zoom lenses: 14-24/2.8, 17-35/2.8, 28-70/2.8, 70-200/2.8VR
My fastest lens is f/1.2 (x3) and slowest f/2.8

Don't hold you breath on Nikon providing a firmware update. All of us D7200 owner are still waiting for the firmware update to allow us to use the P lenses without the VR switch. It arrears Nikon has adopted a new business model to force users to upgrade their cameras rather then maintain compatibility.

Not to worry. Nikon will soon introduce the D5++ body (can't be a D600 who knows what Nikon will call it) which will solve your problem.

I don't quite agree with your gloomy view of planned obsolescence. My oldest Nikon bodies are from 1970's and they still work with my lenses. There are a few exceptions but since some of the lenses were introduced 45 years after the bodies, it is not unacceptable, it is admirable. I have digital bodies from 2001 and they still work with every lens I have. I have 40+ lenses, the oldest from 1960's and they still work with every body I have.
No other camera manufacturer can demonstrate a similar track record. And of course some new features will always be absent from some old products. There isn't a firmware upgrade to use AF-P lenses in my D1H. Not that I'd ever buy any AF-P lenses, though.
You can't use your father's T-Ford tires in your Crown Vic either.

Why assume this guy that is no industry insider, is accurately predicting Sony dropping the XQD? Even this guy did not claim that, only that a small start up struggling in debt decides to limit their product line to the best sellers. Sony has very high end video gear needing that format. Besides the sockets are the same, signaling levels the same since the XQD cars was developed by the same trade association that developed the DFExpress, which will not even be available for a while. They intentionally used the same hardware.
So what industry insider in the memory industry who predicts the same thing as this YouTube guru? None.
But believe it as you will. For you guys who think this guy knows something no one else does since your D850 and D5 are no longer viable, I will offer you $100 for each one.
