XQD cards DEAD

CFexpress card is physically compatible with XQD and a firmware upgrade should take care of the camera end. I haven't bought XQD cards yet and seems like I won't need to. Currently I have enough CF cards to last me a few lifetimes.

Don't hold you breath on Nikon providing a firmware update. All of us D7200 owner are still waiting for the firmware update to allow us to use the P lenses without the VR switch. It arrears Nikon has adopted a new business model to force users to upgrade their cameras rather then maintain compatibility.

I don't quite agree with your gloomy view of planned obsolescence. My oldest Nikon bodies are from 1970's and they still work with my lenses. There are a few exceptions but since some of the lenses were introduced 45 years after the bodies, it is not unacceptable, it is admirable. I have digital bodies from 2001 and they still work with every lens I have. I have 40+ lenses, the oldest from 1960's and they still work with every body I have.

No other camera manufacturer can demonstrate a similar track record. And of course some new features will always be absent from some old products. There isn't a firmware upgrade to use AF-P lenses in my D1H. Not that I'd ever buy any AF-P lenses, though.

You can't use your father's T-Ford tires in your Crown Vic either.

Not to worry. Nikon will soon introduce the D5++ body (can't be a D600 who knows what Nikon will call it) which will solve your problem. :encouragement:
Arh, I'm not that worried because I'll go and order an extra Xqd card, then it's ok. The D500 is a great camera by the way:)

Why assume this guy that is no industry insider, is accurately predicting Sony dropping the XQD? Even this guy did not claim that, only that a small start up struggling in debt decides to limit their product line to the best sellers. Sony has very high end video gear needing that format. Besides the sockets are the same, signaling levels the same since the XQD cars was developed by the same trade association that developed the DFExpress, which will not even be available for a while. They intentionally used the same hardware.

So what industry insider in the memory industry who predicts the same thing as this YouTube guru? None.
But believe it as you will. For you guys who think this guy knows something no one else does since your D850 and D5 are no longer viable, I will offer you $100 for each one.

I think you are referring to Sony which has the policy of orphaning products after very short product cycles by dropping product support and parts soon after a model is stopped being produced. I will never buy Sony due to that corporate policy.
I was able to get some parts from Nikon for a D90 not long ago. Sony is dropping support for models still sitting on store shelves.
I was burned badly by Sony once. Along time ago I bought a PCM3324 digital multitrack tape deck for $124,000 and $19000 for its controller console. and 1 year later dropped the product for a new model so dropped parts availability. Those and every tape deck had common wear items replaced periodically and when those items stopped being available the value of your investment goes to almost $00.00
Their only answer was to buy the new version for $146,000. This was when the median 3brd house price was $89,000.
Canon is pretty good with old parts but I don't Canon because they orphaned my entire lens collection, 27 Canon lenses used on my A1 I loved in the film era. They dropped that mount film mount when they started digital. When I went digital, Nikon was my only real choice being so much better fit and trim, egonomics and dynamic range than Canon.

SD UHS-II cards are nearly as fast, and so your D500 will not become obsolete even if XQD cards become impossible to find. But, XQD cards are not going to just disappear. Doom and gloom sells well on Youtube, and is good click bait. :)

I guess the cfx cards could be an option, but holy cow are they likely to be expensive!
