I realize you are talking about B+W filters, but a while back Horoscope Fish posted a link where UV filters were tested.

One of the longest standing debates in photography circles: To put a protective filter over the front lens-element, or not?

Not more of the the usual blah...blah...blah on the topic, Lens Rentals gets all science-y and reports their findings:

My Not Quite Complete Protective Filter Article

There was a Hoya filter that was inexpensive but also scored highly. I looked up the info on the Hoya filter mentioned in the article and found it comes in a variety of sizes:

The one Hoya filter scored very well on all the tests and only averages $20. That's a bargain plus it is the thinner profile which is more advantageous for wide angle lenses. Thanks for the info.

It's very easy to take a top-shelf filter and an el-cheapo filter and swap the glass in them. Net result: You have a genuine factory box and ring with a chunk of soda glass in it.

If you are patient, I've found "new-old stock" BW filters on eBay. As for China, I personally buy nothing from the Chinese.
