Triggers for HSS

I'm interested in trying out HSS but need triggers that will allow it. I contacted Vello asking if they have any, and they sent me these links.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1035986-REG/vello_vcttl_nr_captain_ttl_receiver_for.html

Is anyone familiar with other trigger brands that offer HSS? Is there anything specific I should look for? I'd definitely like one that is compatible with iTTL as well as work in manual.

My current flash units are an SB-910, SB-700, and two SB-28 (which don't offer iTTL but can still work manually).

And does anyone know anything about Pocketwizard's? I know they can be more expensive but have heard good things about them.

Check out the Yongnuo triggers. I know they will trigger up to 1/250sec if that is fast enough for you.

Thanks but I really want triggers that will work with faster sync speeds. I've seen some HSS stuff that I'm interested in trying but can't with the triggers I currently own.

Like Paul says the 622n are good. If you have a look on Amazon you can get some Dumb triggers that shoot up to 1/8000

I had a Neewer set of triggers (Link Below) for my first HSS flash which was also a Neewer

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00QBXPCTY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would highly suggest though looking at the Godox flashes and strobes their system is amazing and their X1T-n trigger is something else. You are able to control the light power from the camera and dont have to keep walking over to the light and changing the power, this saves so much time in my opinion!!

I have the TT600 flash and the AD600BM strobe.

True dat... If I was starting over and needed a new set flashes and triggers I'd probably go all Godox.

I am slowly working my way to all Godox now!!

I started off with Yongnuo. I have 4 Mark 4's that I used to use for studio work.

Then I got the Neewer for HSS ... Then I wanted more power and brought the Godox 600BM and decided I wanted a flash for a hair light that will HSS too so I now own the 4 mark 4's that I use indoors and the Godox strobe and flash. I will be looking to sell the Yongnuos and change them to the Godox system eventually!

I have the Yongnuo 622N-II's. They specifically list them as compatible with sb-600 through 910. So if you get interested in them, find out if they work with your sb-28's if that is important. They don't work at all with my old little sb-400.

My head is starting to hurt now! :beguiled:

Looking at info on the Godox, an Amazon question says the Godox isn't compatible with the SB-700. :( And looking at info on PocketWizards, they aren't compatible with my SB-28 units. Lastly the Vello triggers don't have good reviews on B&H.

So...if I wanted or needed to use 3 Nikon flashes as HSS, would it just be better to get a third newer Nikon flash and use them as CLS and forego triggers for HSS? I have general Vello triggers for non-HSS. It's just if I need to use 3 flashes for HSS that I'm concerned about as I only have 2 newer Nikon flashes.

Are you averse to using Yongnuo triggers? Because if I understand you situation correctly you have two flashes now, an SB-28 and an SB-700. You could get a compatible Yongnuo wireless setup (one transceiver and two triggers) that would work with both existing flashes, and support HSS, for about $125 on Am-a-zon. Boom. You're done. When and if you need a third trigger for your third flash, pick up another 622n for about $40. Whether this is a better route than using the CLS system I don't know. I use my 622's with my YN565, YN568 and SB-700 and I'm happy as a proverbial clam at high tide; but maybe I'm not fully understanding your dilemma?

Yes, in a way I am. :( I've read how Yongnuo isn't expensive so if something breaks, it's easy enough to replace because of the price. But I don't want something that *might* break or stop working because it's cheaply made. Granted, I have zero experience with the brand, but I want to invest in something that has a reputation for longevity.

Like I said, I might just go with a third Nikon flash and not need specific triggers for HSS. I doubt distance between flash and camera would be an issue for the things I am interesting in trying.

But I'm still weighing all my options. ;) However, Godox and PocketWizard appear to be out of the question due to incompatibility.

Okay. :)

Well, good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks, Fish. ;) I'm not going to write it off completely. It certainly wasn't #1 or #2 on my list, but it looks better than some of the lesser expensive triggers. Just need to decide whether to go with some type of trigger or just get another Nikon flash. It's just that I already have 4 Nikon flashes, but the two SB-28 units aren't going to be able to do as much as I anticipated. :indecisiveness:

I suggest asking your photo buddies in your town to borrow their YN-622 system...surely one of them is using them since they are so popular. I have pretty much stuck to Nikon accessories except for grips but these little 622 and 622 Tx are tough, they sure feel more rugged than the expensive Pocket Wizard. I use mine every day have not had a miss-fire. An number of my friends who club and event shot liked mine so bought them also.

I looked up info on the Yongnuo 622N-II triggers, but my SB-28 flash units aren't listed as being compatible. :( I really wanted the option to use up to 3 flashes together, but apparently that will only happen if I buy another flash :sorrow: (like I need more than four). :beguiled: Only my SB-910 and SB-700 will work with any of the previously listed triggers. Geeze. So do I want another SB-700, or do I want to splurge on an SB-5000? I don't want anything with less power than one of these as it's always good to have a back up in case one needs to be repaired again. Then I can use Nikon's CLS and not need any triggers.

After a few emails with a PocketWizard rep, it appears my two SB-28 flashes are supposed to work providing I set them manually at the units. This way I won't have to buy any additional flashes since I already have four. My local camera store said they can order the FlexTT5 set. Since I have 4 flashes and also need something for the camera, I will probably get the 5-pack set as well as their 4-pack. That will give me 4 transceivers, 1 transmitter, and 2 controllers (it's a better value buying the 2 sets even though I will wind up with an extra controller) and two cases.

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. :encouragement:
