Sand Bags

So, this may be a silly question (and possibly in the wrong place).

What are people filling the sand bags used to weight lighting and backdrop stands?

It seems to me that if you were to use beach or traction sand in them it'd find it's way out through the weave of the bag and maybe even cause problems with the zippers. I was tempted to use lead shot, or maybe small washed river stones (typically used in landscaping). But what is everyone else doing?

Thanks!

I use actual sand, but only because the sand bags I bought are pre-filled with sand. Not the most mobile, but for anywhere I can get with a car they do the job.

There are some train tracks not far from the house so I use railroad ballast (rocks). It is much cleaner than sand and will not make a mess.
