SD Card - Help Please! Noob keeps getting "Card Err" messages on D7200

After 10 years of digital point and shoots, I decided to get back into "serious hobby" photography (had a 8008s years ago) and bought a D7200 last month. Love it.

However, from the first day, I have been getting "Card Err" messages after less than a dozen shots. I have 3 SD cards, and I have formatted each in the camera several times - each time they work fine until the warning goes off after a few more shots. I have spent several hours researching this over the past few weeks and still have the problem.

The cards are:

1) SanDisk Ultra Plus 64GB SDXC - brand new I bought just for this camera
2) PNY High Performance 32GB SDHC - less than 3 months old. Works fine in my Coolpix L830
3) SanDisk 8GB SDHC - Probably a year old, also works in the Coolpix L830.

I did read in the PDF owners manual where PNY is not on their list of recommended cards, so I can scratch that one off the list of concerns. However, both SanDisk cards should work. Like I said earlier, I have had to re-format each one probably 8-10 times because of the card error message. Then they work fine for 10-12 shots, and then crash again. No matter what combination of 1 or 2 disks in either combination I put in the camera, I still get the "Card Err" message after a few shots. Hard to believe all 3 cards are bad, especially when they work in the Coolpix L830.

I have the camera set for medium size, high quality JPEG, single shot (I do mostly travel and scenic, so most of my photos are at least 5-10 seconds apart), and the cards are set up for slot 2 as extra storage (not duplicate).

Please - any ideas????

Thanks!

The only time I ever saw a 'card err" message is when I accidently had the card protect tab on. (that little tab on the top right side of the SD card that slides up and down)

Roy - No I haven't tried resetting. I guess I was hesitant because it took 2 weeks of fidgeting to get my U1 and U2 settings straight. LOL

Maybe I will try that, though. It should be easier to reset U1/U2 the second time.

I forgot to mention that all 3 cards are not locked. Sorry.

If they were, I'm guessing that I would not have gotten those 10-12 shots in before it crashed.

EDIT: If I do reset the camera, do I need to have the cards in or remove them?

Did you format the SD cards in the CAMERA and not with another camera or in the computer?

Yes - formatted them each time in the camera. The SanDisk 64GB was new and has only been formatted in this camera only. The others had been in the Coolpix but I had re-formatted them in the D7200 (several times).

I just did a reset while it was on "Auto" setting. I'll take it out tomorrow and do some backyard photos and see if the error message returns.

Thanks.

You can save your U settings (assuming your card works enough to get through it) Do it with wrench menu, save/load settings. It saves to the sd card so don't format afterwards. You can transfer it to the replacement d7200 if it gets to that point.

That is odd. I have not seen the issue in my 7200 before. I always use identical cards and one is raw and the second is raw+JPEG. I am curious if the reset worked. I would be thinking the camera has a problem.

I have been using PNY High Performance 16GB SDHC cards for over a year no problem in my D7100. As Danno I also use identical cards. Recently twice I have had the card error, reinserting the card fixed the problem. Interestingly this was with a replacement card and seems to be limited to slot 2 the only one which is removed regularly. Time will tell if that is all it was.

If its still under warranty and you are having regular issues I would have it looked at.

Did the "Two-Green-Button Reset" with both SanDisk cards in the slots. Then I removed the old 8GB one and kept just the new SanDisk 64GB. Re-Formatted the card in the camera. Then I went out in the back yard and fired off about 35-40 photos with no error messages. Yeah!

If it works OK for awhile, I may get another SanDisk 64GB SD card like the one I have. They are on sale this week for $30. Two 64GB disks will be plenty for any vacation or trip I'll be taking anytime soon.

Thanks, everyone, for your input.

I had a little time yesterday and today after work to walk around the back yard and take a few photos. Camera is working great now - no "Card Err" messages! (Thanks to all who offered assistance on this thread. Here are a few "first photos" beyond the experimentation stage.

Cardinal01.jpg
State bird of West Virginia - Cardinal. Cropped to remove my porch roof from the photo.
Handheld.

Rooster01.jpg
One of my wife's many planters around the garden. One of my favorites.
I wanted to see how the Active-D Lighting worked (set on Normal). Although overcast, the sun was off to my right and that side was much brighter. I am pleased with the result.

PurpleFlower01.jpg
Tried out the kit 18-140 lens as a quasi-macro. This small flower is only the size of my thumbnail. Again, very pleased especially since it was handheld.

Looking forward to having a day (or three) to head up in the mountains for some photos.

EDIT: Just noticed the photos don't have EXIF data. I wonder if it's because I downsized them in Photoshop Elements?

Glad your camera is working. This forum likes the pictures resized to 1000 pixels or less on the long side. Otherwise, it resizes automatically and the exif goes away for unknown reasons. I'm not sure how you do that in Elements, but that's probably the problem; they weren't resized enough.

That's it - I sized them 1280X???? (Cropped)

Thanks.

Glad you solved your SD Card problem.

With PSE, if you saved your files "For The Web" it will strip the EXIF data as I recall.

DANG IT!!!!!

No problems for two weeks and about 100 photos. Then, tonight, I plug in the Nikon USB cord that came with the camera and transferred photos to the computer. With the camera off, I plugged in the cable at both ends. Then I turned the camera on and waited for the popup to start the transfer. Popup comes on and I click to load photos (just like I've done a thousand times before with my other cameras) I get a message "No New Photos". Then I look at the camera display and see "Card ERR". CRAP! I shut everything down, then re-started the whole process. This time, the photos transferred. I then formatted the card twice just to be sure it was wiped clean. The SanDisk 64GB is the only card in it.

Ideas? Could it be something I'm doing wrong in the transfer process that is screwing up the card?

It does not sound like you are doing anything wrong. It might be time to call Nikon and see if they think you should sent it in.
