Manfrotto Gear Head

I have been using Manfrotto 329's pan and tilt heads but they have become an adjustment pain in the butt!. Even with the bubble levels, the constant loosening and readjusting becomes tiresome and also getting backed into corners nearly impossible to do. In interiors and architectural photography I commonly use a 14-24 lens and the leveling of the camera is the first way to save time straightening in post. I picked up a new Manfrotto 410 Junior gear head and so far (only one shoot) it is great, easy and so accurate to adjust, no more overshooting the bubble and then the usual back and forth dance. For anyone needing a level camera, be it for what I do or even landscapes anything less than a gear head is a pain. Manfrotto also has a 405 series but it is larger and heavier. Weight makes a big difference when you go up and down stairs with the equipment, so hoping the 410 junior is a keeper. Build quality is typical Manfrotto, excellent!

I will update when I get some more hours under my belt with the head.

I've used the 410 with both large and medium format. Right now, it's on a Bogen 3221, but I've also used in on an older Bogen 3036. Just to be anal, I also attached a 5 lb counterbalance on the geared post.

The 410 is a very handy head. I like the fine gearing, but I can also use the coarse controls to move the head quickly. And you are absolutely correct; there's no backlash on the gears.

Good luck, and I think you'll really enjoy it.
