    Tripod advice

Time to go for a new tripod. I just don't trust my D7100 on top of my old Vivitar piece of carp.
Looking at this Manfrotto 293 with a ball head. 8lb max.

Anyone have experience with this, or something in this price range?
This is at the top of my budget. Just using for occasional landscape stills and star shooting.

youll get a huge range of suggestions from folks here regarding tripod/head. everyone has their favorite brand. I dont have one. I look for bang for the buck and have no brand loyalty with them. I still have my heavy bogen 3221 and HUGE 3038 ball head that was meant for medium format. not rellevant so much today with VR and very capable high iso in FF.

years back there was no competition to the tripods and legs (basically bogen and slik were the main comeptitors-gitzo was for the very wealthy) and today with the asians giving a lot of bang for the buck, manfrotto is overpriced for what they give IMO. and I own a lot of bogen gear. but thats me. I dont think one needs to invest a lot to get a solid tripod

I must admit I stopped looking for good brands when I bought my first gitzo tripod and ARCA swiss ball head! I was so thrilled with them that I just couldn't see farther than that! But I believe other setups can work very well indeed as my buddy Rocketman just mentioned!

Plenty of excellent tripods and heads to choose from; I'm only going to suggest you stay away from the Manfrotto quick-detach system. Get an Arca Swiss head. Seriously.

Donít get sucked in with the cheaper price.
I spent a good two weeks researching for a good tripod andball head since I also have very expensive equipment.
Like what I suggested to @Bill16, which he ended up buying the arca swiss Z1 ballhead and apparently a Gitzo tripod. They will last a lifetime and will never need to look for something better. They are an expensive investment but worth every penny.

I have two manfrotto 3031's with 329 pan tilt heads. Just got the second tripod so I can do 2 videos of a chef cooking. I liked the 329 head so much I bought a second for the newer tripod and I have several of the quick release plates and wanted to keep everything common. The tripods are not for hiking but are rock solid with even long lenses, I really like the build quality.

If you do macro, the off center pole tripods are great for getting you into all sorts of positions! The two gitzo tripods I have are both off center pole tripods, with one aluminum and the other carbon fiber!
