Tamron and Sigma have introduced new 150-600 lenses - this has resulted in plenty of the older 50-500 and 150-500 lenses hitting the used market. You could save money buying used.

I have one of those. I have not used it as much as I would like due to the weather up here and just about every other excuse you can think of. I have used it both freehand-leaning on objects for support, and on a tripod with a remote shutter release. To be honest, I saw no difference in quality, although the subjects were different. I would be more happy if it were sharper at 500, but it still makes a usable photo dependent on need or desire of course. Just be aware it is a very large lens.

Wil this auto focus on the D7100?

It's the first wildlife lens I have and 98% of anything with fur or feathers that you'll find on my Flickr pages is this lens with either the D7100 or D7000. Focuses just fine with it. Occasional hunting in the dark or when birds get behind branches and whatnot, but it's the rarity. Been thinking about parting with mine to trade up to the 150-600mm Sport Sigma, but if I do I know I'm going to miss the weight of this one in comparison - the sport is a beast.

Have just bought this after going through second hand 80-400 and 150-400 and a used 150-500 all of which had problems and were very noisy . Bought a "ex demo " for £565 which was brand new and you can get grey at simply electronics for £485 ( in UK you have a 12m Sigma Warrantee on Grey)
Very pleased with it and the quality is fine and all ok on the D7100 once you have set the focus adjust.
This model is going out of production so move fast if you can get one cheap.

I think I would love to give this lens a shot myself, but these days it is just not doable! Maybe next year? I just don't know. Sure sounds good though!:)
