My first pro photo printer arrived today - a Canon (on a Nikon forum)!

I hope that nobody kicks me out from this forum now when I bought Canon-gear...

Well, it's a printer. I got a Canon Pixma Pro-1 for around 600€.
I just did a wedding and I thought about getting control of all the steps.
I don't know if I win anything economically but the thought of having control of all the steps from
photographing to printing makes me happy :)

It arrived today, it is a beast of a printer coming from small consumer printers.
I needed to clear my "work" room to make room for it.

My little media business grows a little yet again.

We are willing to forgive you since Nikon does not manufacture printers, the Canon printers are pretty good, and will give you good results. I too do not like to let anyone else have control of my photos and would rather print myself than trust anyone else to do so. I also mat and frame my own work but only because I have the facilities to do that. Your next big decision will be the choice of paper. Canon luster is not too bad but my favorite paper, Ilford Gold Fibre seems to be on it's way out. Be sure you pick a paper you can expect to buy now and in the future so that your output stays consistent.

Oh! I was just rambling away about how much I love my printer - also a Pro 1 :)

Its an awesome printer. My best advice: go to print settings on your computer and turn of auto shut down. The printer needs to be turned on all the time (and you need to print at least a few prints every week).

Every time it's turned of, it cleans itself when turned on again and that takes a lot of ink!

I use Hahnemuhle Luster paper for "standard" prints, I really think it's a great looking paper.

One of the first things I did, was to print a picture I liked a lot, in A3+ size. I was pretty blown away instantly...

I just picked up a Pro 10 for $100.00 after rebates last night. I can't wait to start printing. Good advice on not turning it off Btw.

Canon seems to change their price/rebate for the Pro-10 every month. i got mine in Nov for under $150 after a $250 rebate ($398 originally). still haven't set it up because i still have 2 old computers hanging around (that i sometimes still use) that i haven't gotten rid of yet but that printer is huge. can imagine how big the '1' is.

edit: should mention that i got a pack of Canon 13x19 Pro Luster paper 'free' with the printer which may explain the difference in price but not sure about that.

You might want to consider a new thread rather than tacking on to a 5+ year old thread. Also, if you provide us with more information and size and type of photos, budget, etc. would be helpful.

IMO less costly to have prints done by a local processor.

I was one of the folks that jumped on the printer wagon back a few years ago that @hark spoke about. I do not print much anymore. It is more than I want to keep up with, but if you want to go down this road I would recommend checking out Jose Rodriguez on YouTube. He knows his stuff. He did get me buying ink and filling my own cartridges which does save a lot of money, but I just did not print enough to warrant the effort.

Here is his link. He will tell you the good the bad and the ugly about printing and printers. I wish you well with this effort. Also welcome to the forum.

I recently gave up on ink jet printers and last week bought a Brother color laser.
It is not touted a a photo printer but I don't print them anyway. They look pretty good, not for framing, but passing around.

No way will your overall annual cost of ink jet prints beat the mail order places or Costco.
And you will waste three or four before getting one you like.

Had two HP's and recently a Canon Pixma. It was fun deconstructing them and marveling at the hundreds of parts and exotic internal mechanisms.

Congrats! I have a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 and love it! Don't pay exorbitant prices for the inks, I use LD products and their inks are about a third the price of the Canon ones and do a fantastic job.
