Counterfeit rechargeable batteries

Just in case you'd not seen this.

It has come to our attention that counterfeit Nikon rechargeable batteries are sold in various countries around the world.

Nikon rechargeable batteries are high-energy devices which are designed to respond to heavy power demand and are manufactured to strict standards of safety and reliability. Counterfeit batteries may not be equipped with safety mechanisms such as the protection device that is fitted in genuine Nikon rechargeable batteries. This may effect performance or in the worst case it could cause damage or injury to the person using the camera or charger. From a standpoint of safety and performance we only recommend the use of genuine Nikon products.

Nikon bears no liability for accidents or damage that occurs as a result of the use of counterfeit batteries, including those shown below or other non-Nikon rechargeable batteries. For more information regarding this matter please contact your local Nikon support centre.

What's sad is that eBay takes no action against those who sell these fakes. I bought what looked like a genuine Canon battery for my EOS-M and it turned out to be a nicely faked POS. I reported it to eBay and left negative feedback, but the seller still sells...

There's a huge difference between buying a 3rd party battery on purpose and trying to buy the real deal and getting this fake crap.

The number one counterfeit maker (China) does this all the time including battery grips and even Eneloop batteries. No surprise here.

Just like there are counterfeits for lots of other products. From designers bags to smartphones.
Yeah, apparently someone needs to notify Nikon of the presence of something called the "black market" where you can buy things like, oh... I dunno... Counterfeit "Nikon" cameras for instance. Then you go shopping for your counterfeit battery, counterfeit battery grip, counterfeit SanDisk SD card and you're good to go for the less than the price of a single, legit, EN-EL15!

Black Market? What is this magical place you speak of?

Something I noticed while browsing through Ebay (UK) was brand new boxed D610 posted from within the UK for £999. bearing in mind the cheapest price I can find elsewhere is £1385, how is it possible to sell the D610 so cheaply - even if assuming that it's a grey import?

Example: Nikon D610 Digital SLR Camera, HD 1080p, 24.3MP, 3.2 LCD Screen, Body Only | eBay

It is best to contact the seller and inquire on what is included in the sale other than the body. Straps, battery, charger, LCD screen cover?

I'd never seriously buy anything from Ebay & don't have an account with them. Straps battery & charger can't be worth £400 though! I just wonder how the price was possible.

I always just stick to Amazon or actual brick& mortar stores.

As for the price they could be desperate to sell it or there's something wrong with it.

I emailed Nikon about it & just received a reply.

They suggest that the product may be a grey import with therefore no support from Nikon.

So true

I too was taken in once on eBay for a "genuine Nikon" -it wasn't. If the price is too good to be true - it isn't true.

It does work but not taking any chances. There are a few websites that post how to tell the difference - it is in the print and fine details, but I had two genuine ones and side by side you can spot the very subtle differences.

ON the other hand asking $100 for a battery is just plain ridiculous and begging for trouble. Why Nikon gets away with this is crazy.

I now buy Wasabi off of Amazon. Pay about half of Nikon's price (or less) next purchase will be a pair with charger for $69 instead of $99 each (Bestbuy.ca's current price - more at the local camera store). For a EN-EL15 for my D610. Same deal on batteries for my D5100.

Been using Wasabi for few years now, no problems at all. Backed by Amazon. No pretense - these are 3rd party clearly identified - but perfectly usable.

I buy carefully off of eBay.

Many brick and mortar legit store sell on eBay - overstock, sales, used, ... and often backed by the store guarantee. eBay is not all black market. EG Henry's and Vistek in Canada and Roberts in the US are samples.

But sometimes cheap cheap is good enough. Yes I can pay $100 for a nice shiny reflector - or $10 from China. Not black market in that it isn't pretending to be something it is not. But come on its a shiny bit of material for reflecting Light. "But it wont' last" - True. If I wear one out, I'll buy another, maybe if I wear three or four out I might think that it is worth buying a better quality one. But maybe I will try it, decide it ain't working for me and move on.

I also buy lots of model railway stuff on line - used from private sellers mostly. And handmade teddy bears (my wife's passion) - many of these teddy bear artists only sell on eBay.

Don't through the baby out with the eBay bathwater.

Totally agree. Cheap is not ALWAYS rubbish. You pay for the brand name in a lot of cases, not necessarily quality. I get annoyed that certain things, like batteries, are WAAAAY overpriced for the so called genuine item.

I LOVE eBay :D You just have to read the ad properly, know EXACTLY what you are buying and as already said, if it seems to good to be true.........

Nothing wrong with buying through ebay. Same online shopping precautions apply.

Many of the same people selling and shipping items use both Amazon and ebay ;)

I've used Wasabi batteries in all three Nikon's I've owned and my GF has used them as well in both of her Nikon's. In our experience the Wasabi battery is AT LEAST as good as the Nikon-branded battery and possibly a little bit better.

No real opinion RE: eBay, though I personally avoid it. I don't really feel the need since Amazon Prime rocks my world. Caveat emptor and all that...
