Nikonites camera batteries anyone?

As mentioned here, I've been throwing around the idea of sourcing Nikon compatible batteries since replacements and additional batteries are always needed and the Nikon ones are not cheap.

Here are some problems I hope to solve if this becomes a reality:
  • Actually working with your camera. Since newer Nikon cameras are now only accepting Nikon batteries, aftermarket manufacturers have scrambled to put additional electronics on the batteries to make them work correctly. The only way around this is to use uncoded batteries in a grip.
  • Quality of battery cells used. A lot no name batteries out there advertise higher MAh ratings on the battery casing when, in fact, they're using lower quality batteries.
  • Cost - lower cost + quality = happy customers
  • A little promotion of our community. :)

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I would love it if you could put the nikonites name on a good battery at a reasonable price! :D

Yep, that's what I'm working on!

Also, as an example of a battery that advertises higher MAh rating: Amazon.com : Replacement EN-EL15 Battery for Nikon 1 V1, D600, D610, D800, D800E, D7000, D7100 Digital SLR Camera + More!! : Camera & Photo

There no way it's actually 2200MAh. At the very best, it's 1900MAh. If it were 2200 it would cost a lot more since everyone I've talked to says they can't even get cells for this battery pack higher than 1900MAh, but they certainly can print that it's 2200! One of the customer images even says 2400MAh! Or I could be completely wrong and they found a supplier that has some magic batteries. :)

i have one non-nikon battery (watson) supplied by b&h with my d7100. It has not been a problem, if i need another battery i most likely will buy nikon. My d50 - d5100 - d600 all still working with the original supplied battery, so i am happy.

A Nkonittes battery is a cool idea! Cameta sent a "Power 2000" as an extra battery with my D7100 kit. It seems that everything works just fine with this battery, FWIW.

How about something for the outside of the camera? Perhaps some stickers to go on lens hoods. Lens caps that say "Nikonites". Or those rubber bands that some people put around their lens. How about a neck strap? Having it on a battery, which is on the inside of your camera, won't get the word out.

The problem with batteries is if you don't do your research and get a top notch battery you risk selling duds with your branding on. It only takes a few negative reviews of under performing batteries to soil your name.

In my view the kind of manufacturers who will be willing to let you brand their batteries on the cheap are probably the ones worth avoiding. The cheapy amazon and eBay type batteries that claim huge capacity are normally the least reliable when compared to the more recognised names that cost more but wouldn't let you brand them.

Having said that, even the Duracell rechargeable battery I use for my D7100 causes issues with my charger despite working fine in my camera.

If you want to get your name out there then I'd suggest batteries to not be such a good idea. When I'm out and about my battery is either in my bag or my camera. People don't see it. I'd suggest straps, lens covers, maybe a case or bag or something else that's visible would get your branding noticed a lot more.

Rubber wrist bands work :)
