Hey DaveW and other home printers... light adjustment Q

@DaveW, I know you use an Epson R2000 at home. I've got one and am starting to print some stuff for a gallery (first run) and I'm finding I need to do a considerable amount of lighting adjustments from my screen to what I'm seeing on the printer. In my testing it seems that if I do a Levels adjustment and bump the midrange to 1.45 it matches my monitor fairly well. I have calibrated my monitor, but I haven't profiled the printer yet.

I know I've read that several posts of people having to brighten up shots before printing. Is this level typical of what you've found? Have you profiled your printer separately or do you use the ones that come with the printer?

Just to fill in details, I am printing from Photoshop and allow Photoshop to manage the color (I tried it with the printer managing and it was even darker).

A friend of mine is visiting overseas, and last night he sent me a photo. Couldn't help but LOL, it reminded me of you:
