Question for owners of TC-17E II teleconverter

I'm new at teleconverters so I am wondering if others have noticed play between their TC connection. There's between 1/16 to 1/32 inch worth of play between my camera body and teleconverter (clockwise/counter clockwise). In fact, there's enough play that it will register a bar difference when you have the horizon option in the viewfinder. I'm pretty sure this is not right and am planning on sending it back for a new one but I'm curious if anyone else has seen this problem with their TC, too

As you know I just got an old TC-301 but the mounts are the same. There isn't any play and I don't think there should be that much play. What I would do is test it with more than one lens if you can. Then test the lens on the camera without the converter, just to see where that play is coming from.

The play isn't between the TC and lens, it's between the TC and the camera body. The TC/lens connection is tight, as expected. In addition, a lens put directly on the camera body is tight also which leads me to believe there's something not right with this TC. Unfortunately, Adorama is closed today but first thing tomorrow I'll be calling and having them send me out a new copy asap, since I've gotta believe this kind of loose connection between the body and the TC is not normal.

Mine does the same thing. I don't worry about it.

Really? That doesn't seem right at all. I mean, why wouldn't they make a fitting that stayed tight, especially when it's being used on a long telephoto that amplifies even the smallest of movements? I sure hope it's a bad unit because I don't know if I would want to continue using on like this.

So, what exactly gets changed if you can rotate your lens 2°?

It's a very real source of vibration and/or movement. Imagine pressing the shutter release causing the body to rotate slightly as the shutter is opening. But more importantly, it's a vector for dust and dirt to make its way into your camera by getting ground up in your threads (not cool).

You know, if they priced this TC for $20 or maybe $25, then it all would make sense but at the price of $500 it should fit everybit as well as simple kit lenses that cost half that much.

I really have to push on things to get mine to move. It's not like a marble on a glass table.

As for dust... um.... well.... seriously?

I'm pretty sure your TC is not behaving like mine otherwise the dust/dirt issue would be pretty obvious. Which further leads me to believe there is something wrong with my unit.

I seriously doubt being able to turn the TC 2° will cause dust & dirt to pour into the camera.

Focusing and zooming will be 10,000x more of an issue pulling in dust.

Follow up to my post. A new copy of my TC-17E arrived a few days ago and no big surprise, it fits snug as a bug on my camera body. There was most certainly something not right with my first copy. God bless the 30 day return policy!! :)
