Monopod With Umbrella Attached

I saw a guy today that was using a monopod with a J1. He had an umbrella attached to the monopod and it worked like a big sun shade. I think it is a slick idea.

I went to Home Depot but couldn't find the hardware that would work best.

Does anyone on this site use a set up like that? I'm going to build one but was hoping someone else already had the plan. It is a great lightweight assembly for outdoor shooting in bright conditions, and maybe even when it's raining.

This is what I'll be starting with.

After some cutting and forming, I'll be attaching it to my monopod. I'll post pics when I'm done with it.

I saw that DIY while I was researching. It's not like the one I saw, but it looks like a good idea. The bicycle mount appears to be closer to good-to-go. The one I saw today used a pipe-hanger arrangement. And remember, I'm looking to create a sunshade and not rain protection. If it starts raining, I'm outta there.

I think the bicycle mount will be a good choice.

Just a word of caution:

If you attach an umbrella to your tripod, just make sure there is absolutely no wind. Otherwise, 1 wind puff and down the whole thing goes. And it could get expensive!

Umbrellas in my area even if they are the windproof type, do not last due to the strong winds that gust up to 45 kts.
