Recommendations for shoulder bags for travel

I am looking for a shoulder bag to use for travel. Because of where I live I normally have to take a regional jet to one of the airline hubs. I am looking for a shoulder bag that is about the size of a duffle bag I carry now that I know will fit in the overheads of the Embraer and Canadair regional jets. The dimensions of that bag are roughly 17x12x8. So far two bags that look like they may work are the Think Tank Photo Retrospective 40 bag or the Think Tank Photo Urban Disguise 60 bag. I don't have to be able to carry a laptop in it since I have a backpack that I carry that in. I would like to keep the price below $250 (USD). Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I'll always recommend Lowepro bags. They have a lifetime warranty, are extremely well made, and do the job they were designed to do. The company stands behind their products 100%. Granted, some of their bags can be a little pricey, but considering what you're putting into it, and the protection they provide.....well worth the money IMHO.

All of the camera bags that I currently own are Lowepro (Except for Pelican cases) but in this case I would like to get recommendations from people that have used shoulder bags for travel where there are fairly strict size restrictions. I have bags that I could use but they would probably have to be gate checked on the regional flights and they are really too big for traveling unless it is by car.

Thanks,

I fly both domestically and internationally. On a recent short trip from Barcelona to Porto on a regional jet equivalent NO bags except purses or extremely small day bags were allowed in the cabin. I've seen this before (especially in Europe) and luckily had my camera gear stowed in a Lowepro Event Messenger 250 which was inside my traditional carry on. I was allowed to remove the Event Messenger jetside and bring it into the cabin along with my MacBook Air. Best $60 (at Calumet) bag I know of.

I use a Thinktank UrbanDisguise 50, chosen because it was about all I could find that would carry the three f/2.8 FX lenses that have 4.25 inch diameter lens hoods (70-200, but won't fit if on camera, 24-70, and 14-24). It's been no issue on flights (US, Rome, Paris, London), and will fit in overhead even when on top of a regular carry on. Laptop slot is good for books for the flight, etc.
