Advice please on broken Manfrotto tripod.

Hi folks,

I did something stupid yesterday and broke my budget tripod. It is a Manfrotto 7321 YB

clipboardimaged.png

I tried to move the head a couple of mm via the handle when it was tighter than i expected and clean snapped the tightening handle off. Bloody stupid...but hey ho..

It was a budget tripod but actually served my purpose rather well, and considering i have just spent close to $3,000 on my D600 and 3 lenses my wallet is closed to any significant camera related gear. But my favourite subject is macro.. so i need a tipod.

So the reason for this thread is I'm trying to figure out if i can buy a new head to fit on these legs.

This tripod is a single unit.. but i can remove the head from the central 'stalk' via an allen key and wonder if i can fit a new head or possibly more likley buy a new central stalk with a fitting the will fit a new head. Then i could buy a decent head and in a couple of months upgrade the legs to match the quality of the head....

I can't find this model on the Manfrotto site...

Any other suggestions?

I really want to keep costs down right now...i've already spent a $1000 more than i intended this month!

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Since you are wanting a better head and legs when you can afford it, I don't think good money is going into a head for those budget legs.

I've got a Manfrotto MKC3-HO1 Compact Tripodhttp://http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk...tto-mkc3-ho1-compact-tripod-10278010-pdt.htmlOnly £39.99 from Currys, It's my go anywhere tripod
I'd recommend that tripod for now as a go anywhere tripod and then buy the sturdy one that you really want later.
Having a light travel tripod and a sturdy tripod is an advantage, the one on my link is way better than the cheaper compact lightweight ones you can get at half the price, but they are not worth having.

Thanks John, probably good advice.

But i would like to figure out is its feasible to attach a new head on my legs.. and then i can work out the pros & cons.

If it is feasible it would save me buying a 2nd tripod that i don't really want, but it is cheap.. and you do make sense.

You can get the handle for your tripod but it's £9.99 plus vat and may also have a delivery charge.
If the rest of your tripod is in good order and you are looking at a low spend, it might be a better option.

Thanks John.. that's excellent. That sounds like a good route... then down the road i can splash out on a sturdier tripod.

I will have to drill out the snapped threaded end of the handle.. if that goes well a simple handle replacement would work. However i might mangle the threads! :)

Thanks a lot for your input and link to the spares site.. very useful.

Could you take a snap of the actual damaged part and post it here? I'd really like to see what damage occurred. I can't quite see it in my mind by how you described it. Thanks. :)

Here you go...snapped handle bar... opps.

The broken bit actually did not need drilling out.. it wasn't threaded as i expected. Should be an easy fix if i can find the part... fingers crossed.

Thanks for the info.

In the mean time i have ordered a new handle; £16 including shipping, tax etc.

Glad i was able to fix it for so little. I'll likely upgrade in the next year or so. But for my macro & low light needs it serves its purpose well, its actually quite a nice little tripod. :)
