You have an opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime historical photo shot....

Would you set your camera on AUTO, or would you use a programmed or manual setting?

One opportunity. One shot. Never to be seen or duplicated again.

I would set my D3100 on Live View and record the whole thing on VIDEO!

But thats just me. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but VIDEO is worth a million words! :)

well, it appears that you already know that an event is about to occur since you have time to prepare, which means that you most likely know the spot that the event will occur, so plenty of time to set up the camera, decide on the setting, light, do I need fast shutter, or is low light, better set up the tripod, oh,, and burst mode, might as well get 7-8 shots (before my buffer fills up), ok,, ready,, bring on the historical event.. what what... its past?? darn!

I'm surprised with the number of aperture priority responses, but its probably just my photography ignorance showing. I'm a newbie and have been forcing myself to learn in manual mode - and taking some terrible pictures - because I thought the other modes were "cheating." I say cheating because i cant think of a better word, but don't want to offend anyone. I'm a newb, remember? Guess I'm gonna have to start letting my camera work for me a bit more.

As for the historical pic, I'll throw the cam in Auto for now. If I don't I might not have anything to prove to others that I was there, right?

I don't think that any mode is cheating. Each mode has a purpose and that purpose is about control - in Automode, you let the camera have control. Each time you take a picture, your camera throws back a ton of info. For example, if you are shooting in Auto, you can take note of your environment, such as the sun, clouds, nightime, etc. Take the picture and see what settings the camera uses. From there, you can go into M mode and duplicate the settings and see what you come up with. THen you have a sort of reference point on what settings to use on real sunny, cloudless day. With A mode, you can play around with the aperture to see the affects it has on the picture - letting more light in or less light in. This is just one way of learning on what settings to use in what environment. So, for me, none of the modes is really cheating. You can learn from them, even Auto mode. However, don't stay in Auto for to long.

I think the reason we buy these cameras is that they are smart. Why not let them do what thy do best make decisions for us. I also like aperture mode but if I am just out shooting for the fun of it I might even shoot program mode.

Many Many photographers use the Aperature Priority mode to have artistic control of the aperature, and as long as the speed is faster enough, let the camera set speed, but ....
by letting the camera decide speed, you could get caught up in the moment, and let the camera set the speed to slow for hand held, causing a missed shot,
...
so by staying in manual, one is tuned more to the exact setting, and also, to take it one step further by intentionally under/over esposing depending upon the situation and your knowledge of the Camera's ability to meter the event.
..
than well, us old timers just learned on old FM/FEs that just drilled in the manual mode.

Now, before I suggest any mode, what are you talking about?

Is this sport, landscape, group shot, wedding? All these different subjects could call for different camera settings. Maybe if you'd clarify your question I could help you.

This is just a hypothetical question. No rights or wrongs. No "help" is necessary. Just say... you were walking through the wood looking for aviary shots and you came upon an alien. A fast alien that you can only click once. Yeah. That's what I'm talking about. ET and you and your Nikon. Then it's just you and your Nikon.

Sorry Ted, I completely misunderstood the intent of your question.

Manual. Wide angle lens zone focused at about 5 feet or so. Aperture set at f8. Iso 200. White balance on flash (5400K) Shutter speed to whatever is applicable with auto bracketing on and set at +1/-1 stop.

Now if it is combat I might change to an AK47 on full auto. :)

With my ball cap on backwards, I will take the shot and walk away fiddling with pre view mumbling to myself and folks would think -- WoW, that guy must be a pro. :)

Hey! Nobody told me there were Aliens involved. :cower:

My camera is usually in manual so would probably use that mode...When I shoot surfing on a shifting light day I have it on aperture so would use that mode in this case....
