Has there been any problems with this one as I have never encountered any issues?

You know the old saying, if it's not broken don't fix it :D

Peter, you being a fairly new poster have not seen the problems from over the past couple of years. Many very good members have moved on to other sites IMO. Check feedback and suggestions thread.

We have a member who passed on who is more active than all the top ranked
members in the site.

NIKON1.PNG

I do not know how "active member" is listed. 46,000 and only 392 active. :-(

It doesn't help that email notifications haven't worked in months. I stop in every week or so for a few seconds and check the first couple threads and that's it.

IMHO the server is not the issue. No Email is certainly not helpful and is likely a software issue not a server issue. There are other issues that are contributing, the fact that this site is Nikon centric and they have been loosing market share is another detractor. How many have we lost because they are no longer shooting Nikon? ILC are being replace by phones. When was the last time you invited someone to join?

We do a good job of welcoming people. While we welcome people do we encourage others enough by liking their pictures or at least a comment? What does your Thank/Like Given to Received ratio look like. There are some superb shooters here and I think many a newbie may be intimidated.

Yes, Nikon is losing market share due to both less desirable cameras and to company policy's that punish their customers. And as a result, this is costing this web site users. However, the last few months this web site has had many issues with posting problems and other user issues. These problems appear to be both server and software issues and until these are fixed, we will continue to lose users. I know that I am getting frustrated with these problems!

Although new compared to many of you, surprisingly I have been here now for 1 year and 3 months and can honestly say I only once was unable to log on and that only lasted for a hour or so.
From what I can see the forum seems to be predominately members from the US which makes me wonder if the time difference is having an impact. For example I am using it whilst most of you are sleeping. Then when you are all on the server can't cope? You would of thought that might only be an issue if traffic was heavy and the stats don't seem to suggest that.

I think Jeff @Needa has hit the nail on the head re the lack of responses to new members and more importantly the unfortunate situation that people having been leaving Nikon in big numbers over the last few years.

I can confirm I get notifications via Tapatalk as opposed to email.

In the past time zones IMO where not a problem. If so many have left Nikon where are the deals on used equipment.

The issue may be time related I tend to post early EST and like @Peter7100 and have little trouble. It also could be the site access is being throttled by IP providers.

I believe that once the camera manufactures are able to get their production up we will see a price drop on used equipment. Remember most F mount lenses still work on the Z cameras with the FTZ adapters, there are also adapter to use F mount on other systems.

The server really isn't the issue, as much as the software is.... Replacing the server won't improve anything without someone spending a boatload of time fixing, adjusting, and tweaking the software... In fact, if someone has limited resources and time availability, simply replacing the server will be a disaster.

Having been with Canon for nearly two decades, I feel you get better deals and more for your money when buying Nikon used equipment. My very first Nikon purchase was the D7100 which I bought VG condition for only £238. I guarentee you won't find a similar Canon dslr at that price. I also picked up a Nikon 300mm for £400 when the Canon equivalent is selling around £600.
Of course supply and demand really set the prices so it may vary from area to area.

We have a little over 36,000 members who have registered and never posted. I don't think this is unusual, and this message board is pretty small compared to some of the other boards out there. Also, platforms like Facebook have caused many people to abandon message boards. That and life in general keeps people from posting.

I belonged to a very active hobby board that lost a good many members thanks to Facebook. Members who were on there for years just quit posting, and people who lived in the same locations started their own groups. I know, I belong to 2 of the local groups and rarely post on that board any longer. Much larger message boards are thriving. Cloudy Nights, for example, is one of the few astronomy boards out there. There are so many people posting on it now that you are lucky to get any attention on a post.

One of the boards I belonged to had a bot that cleaned out inactive accounts. People who registered and never bothered to log back on or post got deleted. I have no idea if that is beneficial or not.

I like this board. Most people are nice, helpful and supportive, and my posts don't get buried immediately thanks to hundreds of posters. Sometimes I have a problem posting, but not often enough to make me leave the board. Is it a compatibility problem with Safari? I don't know.

BTW, some of the 'active users' are people who join the board just to use private messaging. In this case, I can understand why a bot might clean out people who never posted a thing. They are just taking up space and using the board for communications they don't want on an e-mail.

Some folks post a question and never come back after they post it.

what about a clear out of people that haven't used the forum in 2 years, or who sit at 0/1 posts, that should clear a bit of unwanted luggage???

i know its nice to have a big membership but do we really need it?

The software for this site is ancient, and that causes all sorts of problems.

I don't think that there are suddenly way less people shooting Nikon, and I don't think that has anything to do with our membership here. Look at Back Country Gallery's forum, a great number of the members there are Nikon users, and you'll see there are plenty around that could become members here if they so choose. You will also see an up to date software platform for the forum there, and if you take a look you'll see the difference between the way their forum works and the features it has compared to this one. This forum is badly outdated and has many problems in compatibility with various browsers and current operating systems.

Honestly, I stay active here because I like the people. Otherwise I would have given up a while ago.
