Just bought a Synology DS220J, have it set up to raid 1, but im also looking to set it up so it backs up to an external hard drive and any changes i make to the NAS automatically changes on the hard drive and i need to be able to use the hard drive off site. so can anyone offer any help please?

Raid 1 does the backup. It has 2 drives and the drives are mirrors of each other. The Synology OS has a backup option to backup the Box's drives to an external drive. Think of the Syn drive as a network drive (that's what it is) and you just plug in another drive to your network, and the Syn drive should see it... You simply use the Syn drive's software to backup the Raid drives to an external drive...I believe there's even a scheduler in their software to do this automatically at pre-defined intervals.

While we are on this subject, what is NAS and RAID? I read this stuff all the time, and I have no background to understand any of it.

I have a little plug-in G-drive and that is it. I back up everything to Crash-Plan.

NAS is short for Network Attached Storage. It's basically a network server that you can access from any computer on the network. It is usually set up with some kind of RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) that gives an extra security in case a disk crashes. RAID comes in different shapes, each with a specific number. RAID 1 means that two disks are set up to mirror each other (Data is saved on both disks, one disk is a copy of the other). Then as the RAID number increases the explanation is more complex. The short story is that there is also a possibility to get more storage space with increased access speed and still having the security that lets one disk crash without losing data. Hope that helps.
