Another Storm

Started here Friday night with tropical storm warnings. Saturday the warning was dropped because it changed to a tropical depression. Later that day it turned into TS Sally. We had lots of rain yesterday and it's still raining now.

Stay safe!

Thank you, Cindy.

The storm is now forecast to track further west and my area is now forecast just to experience light winds associated with the storm, but lots of rain, which we need.

And which I don't really need right now. And as of last night, or so I found, I've got a damaged roof. The ridge vent cover is now loose and allowing rain into the attic. I've got a temp fix in place, and am fortunate to have a roofing contractor to agree to look into it tomorrow morning. Hopefully, they don't charge based upon the level of desperation of the customer.

Even though this storm is now much less likely to cause a problem for my area, I've got a bad feeling about this year.

I'll stop rambling, now.

We'll do our best, Marilynne. And you do the same! Lots of activity in the Atlantic right now, and overall this year.

Today's update. I'm under a Tropical Storm Warning for the next day or two, and am about twenty miles away from the eastern edge of the latest forecast Hurricane Warning. My boss called last night and told me to work from home today, so I do so with one eye peeled on the television weather news, one eye looking out the window, one eye on the work computer, and one eye on my iMac! ;)

It is raining now, has been for over a day, and is forecast to do so for the next two days. Total rainfall forecasts for my area range from thirteen to twenty inches total. If we get flooding in our area, I may go out with a camera to record it.

We are under a Tornado Watch all day, but overall, the winds from the storm are fairly light, with absolutely no wind at the moment. (Which is sort of surreal.) If it gets windy, I won't take photos of the wind. :p

What's happening with your roof Wayne?

Stay safe and don't do anything foolish!

The roofer won't go up onto the roof to repair it until it stops raining. For now, the leak is minor and manageable; but if we get a lot of wind, I expect to have more problems. If we get enough wind to blow the ridge vent cover completely off of the roof, then I'll have a new level of problems. I've got a good insurance company, but with our high deductible for hurricane related damage, I'm doing my best to stay in front of the problem and stop damage from occurring.

I'll do my best to stay safe. And do something foolish? Who,... me? ;)

Just rambling....I paid a lot of money to have four eighty-plus-feet-tall slash pine trees removed from my yard two weeks ago. (I had to wait over three weeks to get the job done once I scheduled it.)

As I watch the trees in my neighbors yard move in the wind (~15-25 mph) we're now experiencing, I'm thinking it was money well spent. I just wish that my neighbors had done the same. Saturated soil, tall pines and wind all come together and result in downed trees, so all I can do is hope that the three don't meet in a way to drop any trees on my house.

We are now included in the hurricane warning. The winds have picked up quite a bit this evening and tonight, but not yet to the tropical storm level consistently.

Meteorologists have reported that this is predominantly a rain event, and I can vouch for that. My neighbor's 8-inch rain gauge has filled up once today, and is on the way to being filled again. My back yard is almost completely under water, with the golf course fairway behind us looking like this:

Flooded Fairway-101.jpg

This photo was taken about five to six hours ago. The water level has steadily risen since then and covers the entire base of the pine tree on the right. I don't have photos of the front yard, but many parts of it are also under water. Fortunately, when they built my house, they graded the foundation to about 1.5 to 2 feet above the previous elevation, which makes mine one of the last houses to have flooding issues. Knock on wood that it doesn't get that bad tonight, because if it does, a lot of my neighbors are really in trouble. There are already a lot of pumps running tonight to keep water levels around some homes from getting too high.
@STM, Scott, it looks like the Pensacola/Perdido Key area is now getting hit by the front right quadrant of the storm. Thank goodness that it is no stronger than it is.

Tonight is going to be a long night for a lot of folks!

Hang in there, Wayne! That doesn't look good, but let's hope the rain eases up soon.

I remember being at my grandparents' house when Hurricane Agnes hit. Their house was less than half a mile from the Susquehanna River. Although the land or house wasn't elevated and the main roads were impassable, the water didn't reach their house. Yet in other areas, the water levels reached 6 feet high above the roads.

Hope things turn around quickly for you!

For the most part, we are done with Hurricane Sally here... I hope. We're still getting light rains off and on, mostly off, and the floods are receeding. Also, winds are still gusting to over 30 kts. At some point, the ridge vent cover blew off of my house, so I ended up on my roof re-attaching it temporarily until I can get a roofer out to the house. Hopefully, I didn't cause too much damage when I did so.

I spent part of the day going around the neighborhood helping folks with any issues they might have. Mostly, they just wanted to talk about the storm and what everyone else was experiencing. There was one tree down in our area, but it caused no structural damage when it fell, or so it appeared. The owner of the property, whom I don't know, declined offers to help. I found out later that he sent us away because he thought we wanted money to help him. One neighbor told me that he recorded over twenty inches of rain by mid-day today, including over twelve inches in one five hour period.

This evening, the rains and winds lessened enough for me to get out into the yard to pick up debris. I've filled five of my eight 42 gallon trash cans, and it looks like I could fill all eight two, if not three times over.

It's been a long day, but I've got nothing here but a minor roof issue and a few inconveniences; unlike the folks to my west who took a direct hit from this storm. A lot of others, from Panama City, Florida to Gulf Shores and Mobile, Alabama, have it a whole lot worse: major flooding, wind damage and power outages expected to last nearly two weeks for some.

I am fortunate. Thanks for all of your thoughts, everyone.

I know a family who lives in Panama City. They said their golf-course property is now a lake property. :( Glad to hear you made it through. Hopefully you will get your ridge vent repaired quickly.
