Hurricane Michael-stay safe.

Hoping any Nikonites and non-Nikonites in the path of this nasty storm are safe and aren't without power for an extended time.

One of my former neighbors lives in Panama Beach. She said it was worse than Wilma.

I think Wayne is somewhere in that area. Hope all is well.

Thank you for thinking of us, Marilynne.

I am out of the area on assignment for work, but have been in contact with my family. They are all safe and there is no property damage for us. We were/are very fortunate; until it veered east early Wednesday morning, it looked like it was going to come ashore very near us or right on top of us. From what I'm hearing and seeing on the news, this storm could have been like an Andrew or Katrina if it had hit a more densely populated area. A lot of places 40-80 miles east of us are going to take a long time to recover, if they do recover.

We're past the peak of "hurricane season", when more storms typically occur.

I'm back home in Florida and am lucky that we have no damage, although we do have a lot of small debris in the yard. I got a lot of it up on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, but still have a bit more to get up.

The people about 40-80 miles east of us have it bad, though. I met a young man in a parking lot in town today, and found out he is stationed at Tyndall AFB, and is now finally able to get back to his home, or what is left of it. He had a fairly good outlook, and told me he appreciated that he and his wife are safe and alive, and that "their things" can be replaced.

A coworker met a family from the Panama City Beach area at church on Sunday, who got a call from their landlord late Saturday night that the house they were living in was gone. As in without a trace that it was ever there. I cannot fathom what that would be like, and this time of year makes me as "nervous as a long-taled cat in a room of ricking chairs."

We moved away from the coast of Florida. Hurricanes had a lot to do with that decision. Having spent 50+ years in Florida (since January 1957) I can say I think that the overall weather is getting more extreme.

A bigger factor, IMHO, is that the population is much greater, and communication is increased multi-fold. There are now so many more people affected by the storms and we hear so much more about them, for so much longer.
