Wear a Hat!!!

Hi, everyone. I just want to make point after getting back from a visit to my doctor this afternoon.

I went in for my annual physical, and he asked if there was anything I'd noticed that seemed to be odd. I told him that I seemed to have an issue with a sore on the top of my head that wouldn't heal. He took a look at it and immediately sent for a biopsy kit and a liquid nitrogen gun. He took a small sample and set it aside, then proceeded to freeze the entire area with liquid nitrogen. He indicated that he wanted to be sure with a lab analysis, but he was fairly confident that it was pre-cancerous. But it had to go, anyway, so he froze the area with liquid nitrogen.

The bottom line is that I got this because I was out in the sun, bareheaded, a lot during my life so far. (Lately, I'm prone to wearing a hat with a full brim whenever I go outside during the times when the sun is off the horizon more than three sun diameters or so.)

Do yourself, and your loved ones, a favor and wear a hat and sunscreen when you go out. Maybe it will help you avoid this, or at least minimize the sun damage to your skin so that it isn't a problem for you.

I had several on the left side of my face that had to be frozen off. The doctor said it happens to a lot of men who drive a lot. Mainly truckers (not a trucker but used to drive over the southern USA to photo labs I managed.

I did lots of damage to my skin from trying to get a nice tan on skin that just isn't meant to be dark. It was the 80s, I was young, and just didn't realize what the sun could do. However, moving to Florida in the mid 80's opened up my eyes. The old ladies on the beach looked like tanned leather. Wasn't pretty.

I hope your test outcome is good. Catching it early is important, since it is treatable.

I found a Tilley hat years ago, and they are my favorites now. (I have two.) I have no problem dunking them in cold water when it's really hot outside to help keep cooler than just wearing a hat would!

Believe it or not sunburn is easily achieved in the summer here. I never go out with the camera without my British Army issue mtp Boonie hat

Being fair skinned I have nearly always covered my head when out in strong sunshine.
It helps to have a wide brimmed one ready for the summer even in the dreary UK.
I remember being at an airshow on the hottest day of the summer a number of years ago and getting burnt, the shock to my system brought me out in shingles which was a nightmare!
It makes good sense to keep a hat like a boonie or bush hat plus some high factor sunscreen in your car/bag at all times in the summer weather.

I wear a big brimmed hat to protect a big nose and comparably large ears. I never did in my young days or riding a motorcycle. Never go out without one now.

Tilley's are the BOMB.

Another endorsement for Tilley hats. I have several of their LMT6 hats which are for both men and women. I've gotten used to the comments from strangers who think they look nice. Online photo linked below:

I would also encourage you to use some type of sunscreen. Some companies make both a day cream (with sunscreen) and a night cream (without) that are moisturizers and contain anti-wrinkle cream. They aren't greasy. If you have a female living at home, you might already have something available to try. There might be something specifically for men out there, too.

This is the one I use.

I use sensitive Olay Complete all day moisturizer with sunscreen (SPF 15). They make 30 also.

Thank you. The test results came back and it is identified as pre-cancerous. I'll see the doc in about two months for a follow up appointment, unless I ask for an earlier one due to any changes that worry me.

I am lucky. I have been outdoors a lot as a P.E. teacher, coach, runner, cyclist, photographer, etc. I recently saw a dermatologist and she said my skin is in great shape. I do wear a hat all the time, but I should do a better job with sun screen.
