I have been seeing a notice on Amazon listings for cameras and lenses:

What you need to know – This product has a serial number that uniquely identifies the item. When your order ships, Amazon will scan the serial number and add it to the history of this order. Should the item go missing before it arrives, Amazon will also register the serial number with Recipero’s AssetWatchTM, preventing fraudulent use or reselling of the item. There is no action required from you and the serial number will only be used to prevent fraudulent activity of the missing item.

Its good that Amazon is starting to track serial numbers like the real camera shops, it might cut down on fraudulent returns too. I've bought camera equipment from Amazon but they are not my first choice because they have been known to ship out camera boxes with some random junk inside.

Dollars to donuts this is in response to that small minority of dirtbags who take advantage of Amazon's generous return policy; perpetuating their eBay flipping scam on the backs of legitimate buyers.

And kudos to Am-a-zon for implementing a solution that, hopefully, squashes the dirtbag behavior *without* punishing the 99% of buyers with legitimate returns. Something tells me even with his policy in place Amazon still takes it in the shorts on a regular basis.

But the ease of an Amazon return is one of the main reasons I shop there: I go in knowing if I'm not happy with my purchase getting a refund will be a painless process. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way and I'm sure that is not something that has escaped Amazon's notice.

Yes, unbeatable return policy. Many times for low cost items, they just say keep it and I feel guilty. We buy a lot though, between my wife and I there is something arriving here several times a week so there will be an occasional broken or wrong item. Stick a label on it and put in in the mailbox or my wife takes it to work and gives it to the ups guy when he comes in. Refund usually gets issued as soon as the carrier scans the package in. Way too much honor system there, but I appreciate it.
