I'm guessing things went down something like this...

Buyer: Nice camera!
Seller: Yeah it is. Did you bring the money?
Buyer: Yeah, here it is. No need to count it.
Seller: Nice doing business with you.
Buyer: Yeah, you too. By the way, this is the camera you stole from me a few weeks ago and I'm soooooooo going to the cops.
Seller: Aw HELL NO!
Buyer: Oh HELL YES!
Both: *gunshots*

Carried a gun most my life. Took me a long time to realize I was not bulletproof. Blessed that I did not have to get shot to come to that realization. Rarely carry now. Usually, it is in the woods or in the sticks. Snakes and mean dogs.

A man bad enough to take something is more likely to do bad things to hold on to it.

Such a tragedy. Police are just better equipped for that kind of thing.

Since I only live a few blocks from the local Sheriff's station. I set up all meetings in their parking lot. (which also happens to be the library parking lot). I set up the meet at the west end of the library parking lot. Once I had a meet setup for there and got there a little early and sat and watched a car drive up, then suddenly speed off. The buyer never showed up that time. I, to this day, feel I dodged a bullet or a beating.

Meeting at a vacant house is a horrible idea. Such a sad story.

For transactions, I always meet in a very public, well lit area, preferable with cameras. Coffee shop, gas station parking lot near the front doors, etc.

Exactly! The City of Dallas has a meet-up location at the police stations. I didn't realize this until I sold an item to the wife of a DPD officer, but have used these locations since then.

I used to just meet at Starbucks, which while being public, was also a bit noisy and I missed the fact that one of my lenses is noisy as a result (not a big deal, but would have paid a little less if I had caught that before).
