Hanging Up My HS Band Photography Spurs

After seven years of volunteering with the local HS Marching Band, I've posted my last set of photos for them: https://nhseaglepride.smugmug.com/20172018/Twin-Cities-Christmas-Parade/

My son is graduating this year, so I'm "graduating", too. It is a bittersweet departure, but it will allow me much more time to pursue other photography interests.

I've had wonderful compliments and horrible complaints along the way. I choose to dwell on the compliments instead of the complaints, and the greatest of these compliments are when I see the photos I've taken of these band members used by them in other applications.

I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone take the opportunity to do something like this if given the opportunity; it will make you a better photographer.

That is great. Both of my parents were involved in the “band parents” group when I was in high school. My Dad took a good many photos during that time just because that is what he did as a hobby.

Well @Wiskeyman, you are suddenly going to have a tremendous amount of free time on your hands. That has to be bittersweet. Great photos of the band.

Awesome collection of photos! I learned a lot about Photoshop from the years I volunteered taking drama photos for my local high school. It's a rewarding opportunity that I enjoyed while also helping to increase my editing skills. When I started, the school wasn't sure about the future of the drama department, but after the first year, I was told the photos (and posters I donated to the school) brought attention to their activity and was a contributing factor in keeping them going.

I knew absolutely nothing about creating collage posters from scratch when I started photographing them. If you haven't ever created a collage without using a template, you should consider giving it a try. No doubt your son would love a memento from his last year.

I've been asked this year to be the official band photographer for my daughter's band. The marching season was awesome ... I have had such a great time trying to capture all of the emotions from the season. From the heat of the early season to the snow in the late season, the elation of a successful competition and the emotions of the final performance. This has now led to my attendance being requested at Jazz band gigs and the winter guard competitions. Best volunteer position ever! Best part? My daughter is a Junior ... I get to do it again next year!
