Traveling with your gear

I took my backpack full of camera and lenses with me to Minneapolis this week and for the first time was told to take the camera out of the backpack and put it in the tray with my computer. Is this new? Just curious if anyone else has had to do so.

On a different subject, they tried to make me check my backpack on the trip back due to the overhead bins being full. I tried to explain that Everything in there was very fragile and the combined value was more than my car, but I still had to argue with them!

Yup, welcome to the new world order. PreCheck was suggested as the work around, but as a frequent traveler I can tell you that PreCheck isn't always available and some days TSA just closes the PreCheck lines (like in Vegas) on a whim to have dogs patrol.

The thought of renting gear for destinations just got a whole lot more appealing.
