While friends use the Amazon Echo or Google Home devices, I've never had a desire to be 'that' connected personally.

Yes... I have an Echo and a Dot... The dot is in the kitchen, and I use it all the time to set timers... My 6yo grand daughter talks to Alexa all the time...

Mine also talks to my thermostat and my irrigation system... so I can control the temps/AC and my sprinkler systems simply by giving verbal commands...

No need for it here. Maybe something for the future, but for now I can still get around enough to turn lights on and off, set thermostat... Ha!

They're also available thru my phone... so I can monitor my systems when I'm NOT there... Convenient to be able to turn the AC on/off or the sprinklers on/off even if I'm thousands of miles away...

We have an Echo. We mostly use it for music and to check the weather in the morning, but it will also talk to our home security system

This part I do agree with ... I love being able to reset my AC, or check on the security system and all that while away from home. I'm not too keen on having an open microphone around my house all the time though.
