DSLR Question

So, I don't spend a lot of time reading on the mechanics of DSLR's which is probably why I don't know the answer to this question but: one of the advantages of mirrorless cameras over DSLR's is the electronic viewfinder.

Can't Nikon make the viewfinder on their DSLR's electronic as well?

So, what I'm getting from this is that it is possible, it would just take some R&D to get it going but Nikon and Canon haven't bothered to do so yet.

Essentially, yes.

If I had to guess it's (and I am) that's because market research indicates there is not enough interest in something like that to make it worth pursuing.

Possibly, though DSLR's are losing out to mirrorless so you'd think they would take whatever method of competing with mirrorless cameras they can get, especially if it's something that mirrorless cameras themselves use.

Maybe it's just because they're getting ready to release their own full-frame mirrorless cameras. Lol (One can hope.)

I thought I read somewhere that EVF was a disadvantage for fast action because there was a slight lag in the EVF display, so not everyone would welcome the change, unless the technology improved.

The article that was posted explains a way that a DSLR could have both OVF and EVF.

I think that to a certain extent "Live View" can be qualify as an EVF. The problem with EVF in the current cameras is
. They are slower than OVF as the electronics has to refresh the scene at least 20 times a second
. They have more time lag compared to DSLR (even though the DSLR takes some time to shift the mirror physically)
. They consume a lot of battery power. This is especially crucial in extreme cold climates, as well as in the tropical heat. With a modern DSLR 700 shots per battery charge are easy and without VR most bodies top 1000+. With EVF you get barely 300 shots if you are lucky.

With more advance in battery technology, sensor response and cooling EVF/Liveview will catch up, and then we may see the demise of the Mirror box in the DSLR, till then DSLR rules.

OT
With 30+fps 8k video capability just around the corner, users may be satisfied with extracting frames from the video and that will spell the demise of lower MP DSLR.

I disagree, there is more than enough sales of Sony and Fuji to show that there is a demand for Mirrorless cameras, essentially Nikon could add an EVF and a mirrorless shutter into its DSLR's now and could compete in the market, but for some reason both themselves and Canon are not getting with the times ...

We saw this happen with VHS and Betamax, the walkman to the ipod, the cartridge game system to the disk based. Its only going to be a matter of time before both Nikon and Canon become a statistic ...

I suspect that up until now, they haven't needed to do it, so they haven't. Wont be long until there is a need to have one in the line-up.

I think the big question both of them have been asking was whether they should put a phone on it or not. I think they are still confused.
