Re: Adobe. What Are they thinking?

Sorry about your issues with Adobe. These issues do point out why I am still using my Photoshop CS6 with the NIK plugins. I refuse to open up the software rental can of worms. CS6 and NIK does everything I need, and a lot more. CS6 supports my D7200 in raw, but I will lose this support if I upgrade to a newer camera. If I do lose my use of CS6 and/or NIK, or decide I have to upgrade to a newer camera, I am pretty sure I will go the Affinity route at this point it time. Heck, I used my D200 for 10 years, and am still happy with CS6, so I think I have proven that I don't need the latest camera or software to be a contented and happy photographer.

Adobe is why I use Corel

And I have DxO Optics (free version 9) and Zonner 18.

I have Adobe Elements 12 too - rarely use it.

My hard drive came up with a SMART warning 3 months after Apple Care expired. I did a serial number search at Apple to find out why it was a refurb and it had a hard drive replacement; probably was DOA. Anyway I had gotten Apple Care as I did not know how to take the iMac apart; I had repaired earlier versions of Mac's from PowerPC to the Intel and the newer iMacs used suction cups (thank you, harbor freight) to remove the glass. Since these are mated glass to display I was never sure if I could repair it but more adventurous people did. iFixit and OWC have excellent take apart guides and videos!
Attachment 254516What I would do before taking anything apart is to see if the performance increase with additional RAM. I would then look for SSD to reinstall the OS. I found this to be the easiest to do. Get a Sabrent tool less case about 9$us USB 3.0 and 500GB SSD drive. Use command + r to erase and re-install the OS on the external drive. You can boot off this drive and see if there is a difference. If you decide not to use it at least you have a nifty external SSD for images and what not.

The new iMacs have everything soldered in place. You can't add any RAM if you make the mistake of opting for less RAM to begin with, and you can't upgrade the hard drive after you buy it. (Stupidest thing I have ever heard of.) This computer was a gift. I didn't pick it out. If I had, I would have maxed it out and would have opted for the fusion drive. It has 8GB and 1TB (5400-rpm) hard drive. It doesn't perform any better than my old iMac. Why? Needs the fusion drive.

My old Mac is a mid 2010, 4GB, 500GB 7200 rpm SATA. It can be upgraded to 16 MB.

The lack of flexibility in a computer this expensive is one of the many reasons I am no longer all that happy with Apple. The Apple repair shop found nothing wrong with my computer. They did a reinstall. When I told Apple support that I got a beachball just by clicking system preferences, the response was mild puzzlement with no suggested cause or remedy. It is just a sluggish paper weight.

Thanks for the information, but I am afraid computer surgery is beyond my skills.

    Thanks, Brent.
My Dad has either CS 5 or 6. Not sure. It works fine for his needs. I was just playing with the Elements program, and I think I was too quick to judge since I am rusty using it. Things were starting to come back to me.
However, I read that the Nik collection isn't compatible with it, so if I go with Elements, then I would need an additional program to run Nik.

I am looking at everybody's suggestions. I just need to figure out which program I can bond with.

If you need pixel level editing like Photoshop, try GIMP

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimponosx/

And if you shoot RAW the Features of RawTherapee exceed Adobe's ACR

    RawTherapee Downloads

It does a lot that Adobe and all the others don't. It is more complicated because it had more options but both programs work well on Mac, Linux and Windows. Both of these are Open Source projects with some good developers so will always be free and will be compatible in case you move to another OS like Linux that would run faster on your computer than the Apple OS with the memory you have.

Thanks, I will take a look. I do shoot RAW most of the time.
