"We are going in a political debate. Which we should not do here, maybe off-topic category".
There is nothing political about discussing where something was made or what it cost.

I wanted to bring this off topic, so here it is.

Should an American support American innovation by not buying the Chinese brands?
Is it still American if Chinese made?
Should you look at the tax optimisation of the company you buy from?

I do believe in the free market (political statement) and I do not believe in protectionism (political statement against intelectual property rights), so you should buy the best product at the most correct price. Many do not seem to agree though. Look up Milton Freeman or William MacAskill to understand my position better (they have the same conclusion from other angles).

So you don't support the concept of copyright? Because that's all we have, really, as photographers protecting our photography from unauthorized reproduction, monetization. And of course it's not JUST photographers since most (I'm tempted to say ALL) creative works are intellectual property and as such are protected by copyright. You can't patent a photograph, or a play or any other creative idea but that doesn't mean the creator doesn't have a right to some sort of protection in my opinion.

Tired of waiting through anti-piracy messages on DVDs, Vincent? God knows I am. ;)

I drive an 'merican made Civic. But I am sure Japan got a cut when the car sold new 10 years ago.

If nothing else, buy used from within the U.S., and make the seller sign an affidavit that they will not spend your money outside the U.S. .......

There are some things I refuse to buy from China. At the top of the list is any food stuffs. Look how China poisoned American pets several years ago. Then they farm raise tilapia by suspending chicken coops over the tilapia tanks and let the chicken poop drop into the tanks to feed the tilapia. Do you really want to eat fish fed on chicken poop? Next on this list are American flags and fourth of July decorations. To buy these from China just seems unpatriotic to me. Finally there are Christmas decorations. Why would anyone buy these from a country that actively suppresses christian religious beliefs (except, I guess, when it comes to making money).

Then there are the problems with all the exploding lithium batteries, most of which are made in China. And lets not forget the hazardous wood flooring made in China and sold by lumber liquidators. Finally there is my first generation Nikon 18-200mm lens which was made in Japan and is a great lens. However the later generation 18-200mm lenses are made in China and the IQ is not near as good.

No, we, unfortunately, can't avoid buying many products made in China, but we can try and reduce our countries trade deficit with China whenever possible.

This topic is ripe for serious problems. Make sure to keep it clean and civil or it will be closed. This is one reason we try no to discuss politics or religion. (no one has crossed over yet just want to make sure no on does)

I just sold a pre-recorded reel-to-reel tape to someone in China!
With shipping, I got $80 USD back from them.

We got to talking, and I asked him if they had Facebook in China. No.....

Not since 2009, IIRC...

China cut off access to FB and thousands of other sites after the riots because it was determined "civil dissidents" were using social media sites to coordinate their "seditious" activities and that... Was pretty much the end of FB in China.

I'm with Bikerb on the foods. The bad news is that China has been caught dumping lots of things, including foods into Mexico for packaging and export to the USA.

Actually the Fukushima disaster has me wary of Vietnam, Philippines and other Pacific Ocean seafood. I was going to prepare a fresh crabmeat treat for a Christmas party and could not find any real crabmeat, harvested in/by a US source so I nixed the seafood items.

As to cars, with the advent of robots, good ones are made everywhere now. Meaning the precision and consistency of assembly anyway. There's still plenty of design problems to watch out for.

Some of the most incredible high quality / low price electro-mechanical items are now available off the web from Chinese vendors. And if you want these items they are made no where but China which limits choice. Amazon even sells these items, easy to spot with the two to three week delivery. Plenty of it is photo related too.
