Sigma Rocks. That is all...

I decided to look into having the Sigma "mothership" fine tune the auto-focus on my 50mm f/1.4 Art series prime. Calling their 800 number got a me a live person after two rings. No voicemail tree, no nonsense, just a real, live human being who apparently had all the time in the world to chat me up and help me figure out how to find the serial number on my lens. Super pleasant conversation.

Cost of having Sigma fine tune my lens at all four points and update the firmware: $0

Turn around time to have the factory fine tune my lens: 1 day (received on Monday, shipped on Tuesday).

Cost of return shipping: $0

Forgive me for being naive about Sigma lenses... but why do you have to send it back to them to "fine tune" it? Why can't you do it yourself?

My 24-105mm f4 arrives... in the next 1.5 hours according to the courier tracking... Absolutely cannot wait to give it a good run out over the next few days!

Well Sigma lenses are a little different in that AF adjustments are stored in firmware of the lens itself, not on the camera body like a Nikon lens. Sigma lenses also allow for tuning the AF at four different distances meaning you have four different adjustments to make and from speaking to others who use this lens, having the AF dialed in accurately at all four points is what really allows this lens to perform at its full potential.

So yeah, while I don't mind doing a little AF fine-tuning I also think it's a bit of a PITA to set everything up and perform the calibration for one setting, much less four. I work full-time and would rather be shooting than fiddling with AF calibration. Finding out Sigma would perform the service for free pushed me off the fence and I decided to let the factory do it for me. The quick turn around and free return shipping were just pleasant surprises.

And I expect a full and in-depth report, post-haste, my good man.

Better lenses, better pricing, AND better service.

I think I may have to start looking into adding some Sigma to my gear bag.

nice. theyre just killing it the last 3 years. dying they put out a new 70-200 that will rival the 70-200 vr2/E. its possible. the art lenses destroy everything out there with no fight, except the fat overpriced mf otus. looking to get the 85 art come spring.

The Art-series primes are jaw-droppingly fantastic.

I'm eager to get my 50mm f/1.4 back and just about diiiiiiiiiiiiiieing to get one of their 85mm f/1.4's but, sadly, it's going to have to wait.

That's what I've been hearing. Might get one as a new walk-around lens.

In years past, there was no doubt that Nikon made the best lenses and the only third party lenses worth considering were Tokina. Tokina still makes some great lenses, but Nikon lenses have declined in quality and their prices are going sky high. And recently, Sigma has begun to produce some great lenses such that I will add Sigma to Tokina as worthy third party lenses. As previously discussed, the Sigma Art lenses are tough to beat and I have no complaints about my Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens.

The difference in focal range isn't enough to be of any concern. I'll have to check this lens out.

Ah - sorry I meant it's F4 not F1.8 - I didn't think the diff between 18 and 24 would be enough to take it off the list but the aperture difference might - depends on what you'd use it for...

Yeah, I saw that. I should probably try and start getting more lenses with wider maximum apertures.
