Calculating for Future Purchases

OK, I went through the 200-500/5.6 VR Lens threads and I think that I want to make the plunge for one along with the TC 1.4.

Trying to figure total cash to be placed on the table to be set up.

1. The Lens $1400
2. TC 1.4 $ 160
3. Gimbal Head $ 200 (Not sure on this except I am sure a Wimbley is not in the future.) Recommendations?
4. Case for lens/TC $ ???

I think my tripod will easily support the D7100 and the Lens + TC
What am I missing and what do you recommend. This will be for mainly wildlife shots which seems to be what I do most. Wildlife cooperates and doesn't give the problems that people do. Ha!

TIA

I'm not sure what else you need Walt.........but with the money you are going to spend, I don't know why I am sweating a Tokina 11-16 or 12-28mm lens purchase!(still undecided) I guess I wouldn't mind a decent monopod, some filters, etc. uh oh, here we go!!!! It is like a disease LOL!! Good luck with your goodies!

After I posted the thread, I thought of a monopod and at least a filter to protect the lens.

It is a disease for sure. This list and then I think about a few flashes and flash triggers, then maybe a prime or two, then maybe a 70-200.................................

12-28 You will be happy you opted for the extra length.

Grizz, I have the 200-500 and the VR is excellent. I thought I'd use a tripod but now that I use it, I prefer handheld for the ease and unexpect shot opportunities. I'm using it tomorrow as a matter of fact. It'll be mounted on my D800 hanging from my shoulder on a Black Rapid. Good luck!

You know, I am now leaning that way after really wanting a the 11-16mm. You, kind sir, may have just pushed me off the fence. The 12-28mm seems to be more versatile. Walt said he would lend me the money..............

A few years ago, I was deciding between the 11-16/2.8 and the 12-24/4. I ended up getting the 12-24 because the 2.8 was not an important factor for me. The 12-24/4 Tokina became my favorite DX lens and I was using the full length quite often. I couldn't do that with the 11-16. If I was in the market, I wouldn't hesitate on the 12-28. Good luck.

I don't know what kind of shape you're in, but I would forgo the Gimbal for now. At least until you can see how well you can hand hold that lens. I'm really out of shape and I have no problem hand holding that lens tracking birds all afternoon.

Now on to the TC. My Kenko 1.4 is serving me well on that lens. I don't really see a loss in sharpness at all with that lens. I focuses a bit slower with it attached , but that is to be expected when you're losing a stop of light. I have no desire to pay 3-400 dollars for a Nikon TC .
Also if you do get the Kenko, get this one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/co...REG&ap=y&c3api=1876,52934714882,&Q=&A=details

This is the newest version. I have read about problems with softness with the older kenko models.

Show me a truck driver that is in shape. LOL OK enough of that. I feel I could probably hand hold the combination fine, but I am looking at sitting in a blind to get some shots for my son later on this year and felt that it might be nice to have the setup on a tripod/gimbal.

That is the TC I was looking at. I priced it a little high though it looks like. It will probably go up in price when it comes off of backorder. Ha!

How about a case for the lens and filters? Any recommendations/thoughts?

I don't have a case for it and I don't need filters for the type of shooting I do with it. Sorry, not much help.

The Gimbal you can pick up for about $100 -150. It is not fancy but it does the job. Your tripod is the same as mine if I remember correctly and it does a great job with my 7200 and the lens. I use a monopod as well for the softball games and such. I put a ball head on it and it works well sitting to take the shots or moving around when it is too crowded for a tripod.

I use a UV by B&W on my lens for protection. It was in the $100 range if I remember correctly.

One thing I did was buy an extra center column for $20 and mounted a ball head on that. The Gimbal is heavy too and I do not always need it, but I want to use the tripod so I swap out the columns and it takes about two seconds.

I know you will love the lens and I really have come to like the Gimbal.

I've owned Kenko TC's. I use Nikons.

I am as frugal as they come and use 3rd party stuff in place of Nikon for lots of things - grips, flashes, remotes, etc. The TC-14ii pops up used on Fred Miranda with a decent frequency. It's twice the price of the Kenko, and worth it.

I am a believer in filters to protect the lens (Not to debate this) so will probably get one for the 200-500 if I purchase it. I have either a clear or CP-L on all of my lenses 99% of the time, except the Tokina 11-16. I have been hesitant to add the additional glass on the UW due to the chance for flair.
@BackdoorHippie
Thanks Jake for your input on the TC. The Nikon seems to actually be 3 times as much as the Kenko even on the used market. I may have to look at the Sigma Sport. $1400 for the 200-500 and $500 for the used Nikon TC = $1900. For a little more the Sigma Sport which would give just 100mm less reach. Ha! Decisions, decisions.
Are you still liking your Sigma?

There are 3 versions of the TC with the current being the TC-14iii. I purchased a TC-14ii for about $250 on FM about two months ago for use with my 300mm f4 PF and my 70-200mm f4. Works great on both. After reading several comparisons (version ii vs. iii) I found that for the 1.4x the gain in performance was not significant enough to warrant the increase in price. Here's one... https://photographylife.com/nikon-tc-14e-iii-vs-tc-14e-ii-performance-comparison

Granted, Nasim mentions that with the newer Nikon glass the gains could be greater, but I have no complaints.

And btw, I have the Sigma Sport with their 1.4x TC and, well, it rocks. ;)
