West side of the USA

Hubby has decided that next year we are going to visit the west of the USA. Flying into San Francisco (hopefully a trip to Alcatraz this time), and out of Los Angeles. We want to take in Yosemite (he's talking about staying in the park a few days), and I would like to go see some other beautiful scenery, maybe the Redwoods?... What would be on peoples "not to be missed" list.

We did Grand Canyon, Vegas and Monument Valley more than 20 years ago, so its NOT top priority to go see those... as the only thing that has changed in 20 years is Vegas LOL

If you're going to be in San Francisco for any period of time some of the typical touristy sites would be Fisherman's Wharf, the Cable Car Museum and Golden Gate Park. The Palace of Fine Arts would be a good photo op especially if you like grand architecture in your landscapes. For postcard perfect shots get up early one morning and go to Baker Beach. With any luck you'll get crashing waves to go with some great shots of the Golden Gate Bridge.

OK and which new lens will you need for that :D
LOL

Which lens do you suggest :D

I have the 14-24, and 24-70 already so I wont need a new lens... or maybe I ought to get to 70-200 just to make sure I have everything covered ;) (actually HE took me into the camera store at the weekend and we did have a look at one)

If you're in the market I'll tell you a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 just about lives on my D750. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Thanks for these ideas... We were in San Francisco on our Silver Wedding trip a few years ago as a short break between Hawaii and home, so we did the Fishermans Wharf, and the cable car trips... and the Lombard Street trek :) We have decided to not have a car in San Francisco until the day we leave there, so we might be able to drive round to the beach before we head out to wherever our route takes us :)

I was going to suggest Big Sur, but its 140miles south of San Fran, too much I you only have the car for one day. Enjoy yourself anyway.

Oh my, that looks like an amazing place. We WILL be going back possibly the following year (yey, mortgage payments are done) and the coast road is the other route we will take.

I have lots of mortgage payments if you are feeling left out? lol

yeah a drive up the 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) to Big Sur is on my lists of things to do, there are nice Documentaries on it if you search YouTube.

Oh no thanks :) I made my last payment last month, we've been overpaying by more than double and shaved 8 years off our mortgage :)

Thanks I'll look. I've just spent a large part of my lunchtime looking at images on google!

Crater Lake National Park in Southern Oregon
Bring a wide lens.
Oh my, that looks beautiful around there... It looks like it might be a little too far north for this trip, but I will definitely put it on my wish list of places to visit in the USA

Another vote for Big Sur. We rented a convertible, and drove from SF to Big Sur on US1. Just amazing views. Also ventured a few miles north of SF to wine country, Napa Valley, Yountville, and St. Helena and visited a few wineries. Beautiful country, and an easy 1 day trip.
