What to expect from Nikon early next year (2016)

Nothing Nikon can do body-wise excites me outside of the D400. When I see the specs, and hear the reviews, I might opt to go there and convert my D7100 to 590nm IR. MIGHT

That has more to do with how happy I am with what I have than anything else.

I'm not really in the market for a D5, but I don't know that mirrorless is in my future either. Still, always curious to see what's coming down the pipe.

besides the D5 nothing interests me from nikon. I wouldnt buy the D5 but just interested to see specs and performance. Im also intersted if theyll release a new radio triggered flash. not that id buy. in todays world, nikon flashes are overpriced. still waiting for yongnuo to release a 568MKII

im also interested to see if tamron or sigma will release an 85 1.4. or even 1.8 stabilized.

My next camera will likely be a D750 (or maybe another D700 if cheap enough) or a mirrorless one, like th eSony a6000. Let's see if Nikon can beat the Sony a6000 in the next few months...

Personally, I think Nikon has given up on catching the top 3 in mirrorless cameras for the time being. I don't see or hear of any new lenses or patents for Nikon mirrorless cameras. You might say I'm crazy, "don't you know Nikon already has a mirrorless camera?" Sure I do, but nothing Nikon has put out or has been rumored to be putting out will compare to what already exists in the mirrorless world.

The only thing that I would be interested in, is a Nikon 150-600mm VR lens for a thousand dollars.:mask: I'm good with bodies for now.

Assuming the full frame mirrorless body used the history of Nikon F mount lenses, would there need to be patents for new lenses to signify progress? Or you mean patents for the mirrorless body/bodies themselves?

But yeah, I think I agree with you on this.

Well, new patents would signal development for something actually in the process of being produced on a higher level than that currently being offered. The other part of your question I kind of glumped together....I think now that you mention it, patents for NEW mirrorless body(ies) would be considered to have someone believe that Nikon is breaking new ground in the development of a mirrorless system. So far, it seems that Nikon has just thrown out a subpar endeavor of a mirrorless camera and left it taking on water. There's no plan or substance to it. If Nikon is serious, they will blueprint a mirrorless program designed to appeal to the masses. So far, they only appeal to those desperate for a Nikon mirrorless body. Something mirrorless with Nikon stamped on it. In the meantime, Sony, Canon, Olympus, and Fuji are filling the needs and wants of a growing cadre of both pros and enthusiasts who yearn for a mirrorless gem that is worthy of "camera of the year" status.

Fx mirrorless is the only item I'd be interested in, would be a big leap for Nikon.

A V4 based on the J5 with an integrated EVF and the rumored 1 Nikkor 9-30mm f/1.8-2.8 would make me very happy. I am really enjoying the design of the X-T1 - if Nikon upgraded the Df II and looked at the Fuji controls, I would seriously consider it.

What I've heard from my local Nikon dealer is that we could see a APCS mirror less Nikon sometimes next year. Again, this is only a rumor but it would make sense if Nikon wants to stay in the game. It would be very nice if the mirror less would take the F-mount lenses with full functions (auto-focus and aperture). But maybe this would only be available with an adapter (I wouldn't mind as long as all functions work).

Again, fortune telling is not my strongest point... :)

If it was like the 1 series adapter all your main functions would work but not some of the extra special functions that come with mirrorless

An APS-C mirrorless makes sense if Nikon wants to continue to use the F-mount. Maybe the next gen D3xxxx? What is lost is the reduction in lens size unless mirrorless specific lenses are also introduced? If so, not sure how compatibility would be maintained. Would Nikon want a fourth lens type: FX, DX, CX and something new? (I'm going to trademark Nikon MX for mirrorless!!)

Good point ... one of the big advantages of mirrorless is the reduced size/weight, so having a smaller sensor size means being able to have smaller everything else ... frame, glass, etc.

That's where I get confused on the "full frame mirrorless" market like what Sony has ... if the sensor is full frame and a set size, don't the rest of the optics then dictate to an extent lens and camera size? Understand that some features like VC can be implemented in the body rather than the lens, like current DSLRs do, but it still seems to me that the overall package size wouldn't decrease significantly. Maybe the camera frame would, but glass too?
